Yogi Adityanath is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is the Mahat (Chief Priest) of Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur. He is the founder of the group, Hindu Yuva Vahini; a youth group embroiled in controversy for its involvement in community violence. Yogi Adityanath is known as a Hindu right-wing populist.

Yogi Adityanath was born on Monday 5 June 1972 (Age 47; same as 2019) in the Panchur of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. His zodiac sign is Gemini. He received his primary education at local schools in Pauli and Rishikesh. He went on to study at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand, where he obtained a BA in Mathematics in 1992.
He left home in the mid-1990s to join the Ayodhya Ram Mandir movement. There he met Mahant Avaidyanath, the former Mahat (Chief Pastor) of Goraknath Math, whom he admired and inspired by. Mahant Avaidyanath had met Adityanath’s father, said he had 3 sons, and kindly made Adityanath his disciple; the father readily agreed. Adityanath abandoned his family in 1993 and went to Gorakpur to become Mahaant’s disciple and eventually his favourite disciple.
He had his Diksha (Initiation) in 1994 when Mahat Avaidyanath appointed him as his successor and chief pastor of Gorakhnath Math. As he was appointed as Gorakhnath Math’s successor, one of his responsibilities was to manage the many schools, colleges and hospitals managed by the Gorakhnath Trust.

Yogi Adityanath belongs to Kshatriya family. His parents named him Ajay and his real name is Ajay Mohan Bisht. After his Diksha, he was named “Yogi Adityanath”. His father Anand Singh Bisht, a ranger, died of chronic disease on April 20, 2020 at AIIMS, New Delhi. His mother, Savitri Devi, was a housewife. He is the second child in the family, out of four brothers and three sisters. His older sister Shahi (the eldest of three) runs a tea shop in Uttarakhand. She said she was happy in the mountains and didn’t want to move.
His youngest brother, Shailendra Mohan, was a Subedar of the Garhwal reconnaissance unit, stationed near the Line of Actual Control between India and China.

He had his first political experience in 1996 when he ran Mahat Avaidyanath’s campaign. In 1998, when Mahat Avaidyanath retired, he appointed Adityanath as the nominee for the Gorakpur seat. Yogi from Gorakhpur ran for election and won the Lok Sabha election. At 26, he became the youngest member of the 12th Lok Sabha Parliament. After he won the election for the first time, he founded his youth wing, the Hindu Yuva Vahini, which caused great controversy and established the image of Yogi Adityanath as a right wing. Since then, Yogi has won five consecutive Lok Sabha elections from 1998 to 2014. As a Member of Parliament, he has been listed over the years as a member of various committees such as the Food Committee, the Civil Supply Department, the Sugar and Edible Oil Department, the Home Office Advisory Committee, the Transport, Tourism and Culture Committee, the External Affairs Committee and many more.
In 2017, the BJP won the Uttar Pradesh parliamentary elections with a landslide victory. Yogi Adityanath was proclaimed Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on March 18, 2017. He was sworn in the following day, March 19, 2017.

- In 2005, he led a religious conversion movement; during this time he converted several people of different religions to Hinduism. In one such purification campaign, he reportedly converted 1,800 Muslims to Hinduism in Etah, Uttar Pradesh.
- In 2007, a Hindu child was killed in a Hindu-Muslim conflict during Muharram. After the riots, Yogi Adityanath visited the site where the child died and made hate speech. After he spoke, police arrested Yogi and some of his followers; this caused violence in Gorakhpur. Yogi was released two weeks later, but 10 people were killed in the meantime. He said–
If they (Muslims) kill one of our Hindu brothers, we will kill 10 of them. If they can burn down our houses and stores, what’s stopping us from doing so”
- In 2015, International Yoga Day was launched, and he made it mandatory to participate. Some people and minorities in India say they will participate in Yoga Day but will not perform Surya Namaskar; because it is against their religious sensibilities. Yogi Adityanath replied:
Those who oppose “Surya Namaskar” should drown themselves in the sea. Lord Shankar is the greatest yogi, those who start yoga, those who want to avoid yoga and Lord Shankar can leave Hindustan”
- In 2015, when Shahrukh Khan made a statement about India’s intolerance, Yogi made a statement in parliament comparing him to Pakistani terrorist Hafiz Saeed. He said–
There is no difference between the languages of Shah Rukh Khan and Hafeez Saeed. India has an atmosphere of conspiracy to poison the country, and Shahrukh Khan is a part of it”
- In 2016, his remarks against Muslims sparked a major controversy. He said–
If the Muslim population continues to grow at the same rate, there will be a population imbalance in India”
- On June 20, 2016, at a religious meeting in Basti, he said—
Mother Teresa is part of a conspiracy to Christianize India. Hindus targeted in the name of service and then converted”
- On April 15, 2019, the Election Commission of India (ECI) imposed a 72-hour campaign ban on Yogi Adityanath. Enforced for breach of the Code of Conduct (MCC); just days before the ban, he was warned by the ECI for his remarks about the Indian Army. He called it Modi’s army. This time he issued a statement in retaliation for Mayawati’s statement –
If Congress, BSP and SP have confidence in Ali, then we also have confidence in Bajrang Bali”

- Yogi is an animal lover. Whenever he is in Gorakhpur, he spends time in Gaushala of Gorakhnath Math. Every morning, he would be with them and feed them. The priest of the temple claimed that the yogis knew the names of all the cows there.
