In 1972, he scored 260 for the first time in the Punjab Schools game against Jammu and Kashmir Schools. Within two years, he joined the Punjab state team. He was also a member of the North Zone team that won the Vizzy Trophy. His first major innings in first-class cricket was against the South at the Duleep Trophy in the North Division, which included star players such as Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna and Venkataraghavan.
In the 1974-75 season, Yashpal Sharma was playing a Ranji match for Punjab vs Uttar Pradesh. He scored hundreds in both innings. Suddenly, he learned that a big man had come to witness the match. Yashpar thinks it must be some top politician. But to his surprise, it was the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. After the game, he invited Yashpal to chat and congratulate him on his centenary. He further added,
“I would recommend your name to someone.”
The next day, Yashpal’s picture appeared next to Dilip Kumar. He knew that Dilip had recommended his name to Raj Singh Dungarpur, a famous cricketer. He told Dungarpur that Yashpal deserved to play for India. After that, Yashpar’s life changed completely.
After scoring 99 points in the Iran Cup in 1978, he represented India in his first tour of Pakistan. He was also part of the India team for the 1979 Cricket World Cup. However, he did not play in any World Cup matches. He then averaged 884 points on the tour with an average of 58 points. He made his debut in a Test match at Rhodes in 1979, where his stellar performance secured his place for the remainder of that tour. His first percentile test was against Australia in Derry. He missed his century after an 85-game unbeaten run of 117 balls in Kolkata (now Kolkata), but he appealed against the Lights and the game was called off with 3.4 points remaining on the day.
He went unbeaten in 201 games against Victoria in the 1980-81 season.During the series’ Adelaide Test, he Sandeep Patil. After this, he was eliminated from the team. He then hit 140 points against England in Madras’ comeback in 1981-82.This game includes him and Gunda Paviswanath 316 runs for the third wicket. He was forced to retire after being hit in the head by Malcolm Marshall during a game in Port of Spain next year. After coming back in the same inning, he scored fifty. He was then selected for India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup. Just in the first game, he scored 89 to help India beat world champions West Indies for the first time in a World Cup. Unfortunately, for some reason, the game was not shown on TV. He was hit multiple times in the chest by Malcolm Marshall during that inning. He was followed by 61 innings in that World Cup semi-final against England. One of the memorable shots in that inning was flicking a six-pointer on the square leg to deliver against York. Speaking of that shot, he said,
“I’ve never practiced like this. It was just a whim. I covered the stump for a better catch, but Willis threw the ball towards my stump and I just reacted to it. I never hit again. That ball.”
His World Cup campaign ended by becoming India’s second-highest base runner in the tournament.
After this World Cup, there was a trip to Pakistan, Yashpar failed to achieve good results. During practice, however, he hit Vivian Richards four times in a row as he represented the North Division against West Indies in Amritsar. He then made four ODIs against England in 1984-85 and was unable to make a 10th game in any of those competitions. He left Punjab to join Haryana in 1987-88. He also worked for the railway company for two years. The 37-year-old scored 100 consecutive goals in the 1991-92 season. After retiring from various forms of cricket, he served as a referee for a while before becoming a draft pick for the Indian national team.
He was an Indian National Selector from 2003 to 2006. He then again became a national selector from 2008 to 2011. India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup when he was selected for the national team. He then served as the coach of the Uttar Pradesh Rangi team. In 2014, he became the head of the Delhi Cricket Advisory Committee.
