Vikramaditya Motwane was born on Monday 6 December 1976 (Age 42; same as 2018) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He received his primary education at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai. His nickname is Vikram. His parents divorced when he was 10 years old. His father is Sindhi and his mother is Bangladeshi. After the divorce, his mother worked as a producer for documentary filmmakers and his mother’s cousin, Shukla Das.

When he was 17, his mother started hosting and producing TV talk shows. He used to help her research the show. His uncle Shukladas is the director of the show. During this time, he met Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was Assistant Director at Shukla Das. Vikram worked as an assistant on the talk show for three years before he started working as an assistant director with Bansali.

Vikram has been involved in the film industry since he was a child. He was an assistant on his mother’s TV show. He met Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a TV show and soon started working for him as Assistant Director (AD). He has been in advertising for two and a half years and earns INR 2,500 a month. He collaborated with Bhansali on hit films such as “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” (1999), “Devdas” (2003) and many more.
He has been a choreographer for Anurag Kashyap’s film “Paanch” (2003). In 2007, he debuted as the screenwriter of the movie “Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal”. In 2003, he wrote a film called “Udaan”, but he shot it in 2009; because he hasn’t found a producer for his film for 6 years. In 2009, Anurag Kashyap finally agreed to make his film, which he completed in 42 days. In 2010, ‘Udan’ becomes the first Indian film in 16 years to be selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2011, Vikram, together with Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena, Started a film production and distribution company called “Phantom Films”. The company is referred to by the media as the “Director’s Company”. They also stated that the company is a content-driven production company. The first film produced by Phantom Films was Lootera (2013), directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. It was Vikram’s first mainstream film to be backed by a full production company. Phantom Films went on to produce several super hit films such as “Queen”, “Hasee Toh Phasee”, “NH10”, “Udta Punjab”, “Trapped”, “Super 30” and many more. In 2014, “Netflix” and “Creative Artists Agency” approached Vikram to direct Netflix original shows based in India. Netflix wants to start operations in India and they want Motwane to direct Sacred Games. Details have been finalized, and Anurag Kashyap has been named co-director of Sacred Games. On December 16, 2016, Vikram, Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti were hired by Amazon Prime to direct 3 shows for Amazon Prime, which will be released worldwide. Zoya Akhtar has announced that she will direct “Made in Heaven,” and Motwane has announced that he will be directing “Stardust.”

In 2018, Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap announced that they would be disbanding The Phantom Movie. The production company was shut down following allegations of sexual harassment against Vikas Bahl by a former female employee of Phantom Films during the #MeTooIndia movement in 2018. The woman claimed Vikas had molested her in 2015 and when she complained to Anurag about it, he ignored her complaints. Vikram posted a tweet clarifying his stance and informing them that they would dissolve the company.

In September 2018, Netflix announced that The Holy Game had been renewed for a second season. It was announced that Anurag Kashyap would stay on as director, but Vikramaditya Motwane would serve as the show’s “Showrunner” and “Creative Mind”. Neeraj Ghaywan succeeded Vikram as co-director, shooting scenes with Saif Ali Khan. The second season of The Holy Game premiered on August 15, 2019.
