At the beginning of his career, Vignesh Shivan directed a short film for which Dharan composed the music. He showed the short film to producer Gemini Film Circuit and his childhood friend Silambarasan. The two agreed to collaborate on a feature film called Podaa Podi in 2012. Due to a number of issues, the film was completed in four years and then released in October 2012 to mixed reviews from critics. After that, he started working as a lyricist and also shot his indie music videos and in 2014 played the role of an engineer in a film called Velaiyilla Pattathari. His second film titled Naanum Rowdydhaan came out in 2015 and like his first film, this one has had some ups and downs. They had to make some changes to the cast and production studio, and the film stars Nayantara and Vijay Sethupathi and is produced by Dhanush. The film, which he drew inspiration from his parents’ lives, was released in October 2015 to critical acclaim.
