Omar Khalid was born on August 11, 1987, as of 2020, he is 33 years old. He was born and raised in a middle-class family in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi, India.
He completed his initial education at Rai Public School in Delhi. After that, he attended Kirori Mal College at Delhi University, where he completed his postgraduate course in History.
He also completed his Masters program and Masters in History at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. Khalid also pursued a Ph.D. He holds a degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University and his dissertation is on “Competing Claims and Contingency on Aboriginal Rules in Jharkhand”.

His father’s native is from Maharashtra, India, while his mother’s native is from the western state of Uttar Pradesh, and she is a housewife. He also has two siblings, her sister’s names are Kulsum Fatima and Sarah Fatima.

In 2016, he was involved in a student protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus. They began to protest against the punishment of Kashmiri separatists Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru (2001 parliamentary attack criminals). During the protest, Omar repeatedly shouted anti-ethnic remarks and was arrested by the police along with Kanhya Kumar, president of the JNU student union.
Following this protest, he took part in many other protests and became the leader of the Democratic Student Union of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Omar Khalid has been involved in many controversies during his career due to different ideologies. He was arrested in 2016 after protesting the death sentences for Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru, and many media outlets called him a terrorist.
He was also embroiled in a controversy when he gave fiery speeches among his followers and other JNU students and portrayed himself as a freedom fighter after his release from prison. He also made a controversial post on his Facebook account in which he compared terrorist Burhan Wani to Che Guevara.
In 2018, he was expelled from the university following a high-level investigation by the JNU committee into his involvement in the February 9, 2016 incident. Later that year, he narrowly escaped when a man tried to shoot him at close range at the Constitution Club of India.
Most recently, he was convicted of participating in the Delhi riots in January 2020 in response to the Citizenship Amendment Act announced by the Indian government after his arrest by a special team of Delhi Police on September 13, 2020.
Khalid reportedly made provocative remarks from various locations in Delhi and called on everyone to start protesting against the Indian government and blocking roads during a visit by US President Donald Trump. He is supported and financed by Tahir Husain, a member of the Aam Aadmi party who has been arrested by Delhi police. According to statements from police officials, the FIR was registered against Umar Khalid, who was soon referred to a Delhi court.
