Profession
Thushar Vellappally was a businessman before he started politics. He was not interested in politics until December 2015, when his father Vellappally Natesan formed his party, Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS). It was established as the political body of the SNDP. His father was the president of the SNDP and Thusahar was the vice president. A few months after the party was founded, Thusahar was named chairman of BDJS, and his father left the party, giving Thusahar full control of BDJS.
His party contested the 2016 Kerala state assembly elections and has candidates in 37 of the 140 seats. They didn’t win, but got 4% of the votes; as a first-time party, that’s impressive. The goal of BDJS is to unite all Hindu dress and minorities in Kerala as a united front to fight for all their rights. Suchar met with leaders of several groups but failed to form an alliance.
In November 2016, Thushar allied with the BJP and BDJS became part of the National Alliance for Democracy (NDA). Thurhar was also appointed as the State Convenor of the Kerala NDA.
Ahead of the 2019 general election, Rahul Gandhi announced that he would contest elections from Amiti in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. A few days later, Amit Shah announced that Tushar Velapali would stand in the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala’s Wayanad constituency.
I am proud to announce that Shri Thur Vellappally, President of Bharat Dharma Jana Sena, has become an NDA candidate for Wayanad.
He is a dynamic and dynamic youth leader who represents our commitment to development and social justice. With him, NDA will be Kerala’s political choice.
— Amit Shah (@AmitShah) April 1, 2019
This came as a surprise to many as BDJS had already announced a candidate for the Wayanad seat. After that, the previous candidate dropped out and Tushar submitted his nomination from the Wayanad constituency, but he lost to Rahul Gandhi.
dispute
- In March 2018, the Kerala High Court allowed the Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Agency to investigate Thuhar Vellappally and his father. The bureau has received several complaints of financial irregularities amounting to INR 50 billion through the SNDP.
- In May 2018, SNDP’s Thurhar Vellapally and six others were booked for allegedly siphoning INR 150 crore under the cover of a microfinance scheme aimed at helping the poor.
- In December 2018, he publicly spoke out strongly against the Supreme Court’s Sabarimara decision to allow women to enter the Sabarimala temple. He said the verdict was disappointing and protested on social media.
- On August 22, 2019, Thushar was arrested in Ajman, UAE, in a bounced INR 190 crore cheque. Ten years ago, Thushar’s former business partner Nasil Abdullah gave him a Dh10 million loan, which Thushar repaid with an undated cheque that was declined. NRI businessman MA Yusuff Ali intervened and bailed Thurhar on August 23, 2019. Thushar was summoned to the UAE on the pretext of an out-of-court settlement, but when he sat down in a hotel to meet Nasil, police arrested him.

fact
- BDJS has been relying heavily on Ezhava community and Hindu votes. Suchar has always said that BDJS is a secular party, not just a Hindu right-wing party.
- Suchar and his family have been accused of corruption by many. His father, Vellappally Natesan, reportedly turned SNDP into a family business, as many of his family members held senior positions at SNDP, and he even accepted bribes from people hoping to hold key positions at SNDP.
- Several members of the SNDP objected to Thurhar’s continuation as SNDP Vice-Chairman even after he became BDJS Chairman, but the objection was later lifted.
