Later, Shivaji won many battles with the help of Tanaji, Baji Prabhu and thousands of Marathi fighters. Tanaji is immortalized by the battle with Sinhagad in 1670. Tanaji was preparing for his son’s wedding when Shivaji summoned him to fight. He left his son’s wedding to follow Shivaji. Tanaji fought bravely to the last breath and died on the battlefield. ‘Gad ala pan sinh gela’ It means “the fort is taken, but the lion is dead.”
Battle of Sinhagard 1670
In 1670, Tanaji was called to a meeting by Shivaji, who told him he had to retake the Kondana fort near Pune from the Mughals. It was an honor for him. Tanaji replied that he would do whatever it takes to liberate the fort from the Mughals. The Mughal leader Udaiban Ratoor, who led 5,000 Mughal soldiers to guard the fort, was a Hindu but joined the Mughal army out of selfish motives. The entire fort is guarded by Mughals, except for the western part of the fort which is covered with high rocks. Tanaji decided to take this route to invade the fort, for which he got the help of a Bengal monitor lizard (Ghorpad) named “Yashwani”. They tied a rope around the lizard and climbed up the fort. He managed to enter the fort with the help of 342 soldiers.
Tanaji’s brother “Suryaji” moved with 300 Mavalas to the gate near the fort – Kalyan Darwaja. Tanaji and Udaybhan fought fiercely, Udaybhan broke Tanaji’s Dhal, but Tanaji continued the fight, tying a piece of cloth around his left hand for protection. Udaiban deceived Tanaji and killed him. Suryaji and Shelar Mama (an old Sardar in his 70s) retreated and killed Udaybhan. The Marathas successfully recaptured the fort from the Mughals.
