He was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Darmao and Padruna constituencies in Uttar Pradesh for five terms. As a MLA, he has held key positions in the Uttar Pradesh government such as Cabinet Minister, House Leader and Opposition Leader. Swami Prasad Maurya was the Minister of Labour, Employment and Coordination in the Uttar Pradesh government from 19 March 2017 to 11 January 2022.

Swami Prasad Maurya began his political journey in 1980 when he was appointed chairman of Uttar Pradesh Allahabad Yuvalokdar. The following year, he was promoted to the Yuva Lokdal state executive committee. He served as Mahamantri of UP Lokdal until 1989. Soon he was appointed Cabinet Minister in the Bahujan Samaj and Bhartiya Janta parties coalition government of Uttar Pradesh from 27 March 1997 to 19 October 1997. During this time, he also served on Khadi and Rural Industries’ portfolios. Swami Prasad Maurya was Opposition Leader from 18 September 2001 to 17 October 2001. In the 2002 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Swami Prasad Maurya was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Dalmau constituency as Bahujan Samaj’s candidate party. Swami Prasad Maurya represented BSP as Chairman of the Legislative Council and Cabinet Minister from 30 August 2003 to 7 September 2003. He was awarded to Khadi and Rural Industries’ portfolio. In the 2007 general election, Swami Prasad Maurya suffered a defeat by the opposition; however, Mayawati became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the fourth time and was appointed on 29 June 2007 Swami Prasad Maurya is the Minister of Revenue and Chairman of the Legislative Council. He was promoted to national chairman of Bahujan Samaj. The political party of August 8, 2008. In the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Swami Prasad Maurya was elected to the Legislative Assembly from the Padruna constituency as a candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party. In the 2012 General Election, Swami Prasad Maurya was elected as the Legislative Assembly On March 16, 2012, he was appointed as the Opposition Leader in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He quit the Bahujan Samaj party on June 22, 2016, claiming that the BSP asked for money votes. BSP head Mayawati discussed all of Maurya’s allegations at a press conference and said the party was about to expel Maurya from the party as he tried to impose dynastic politics within the BSP, Mayawati also thanked Swami Prasad Maurya for leaving her party himself.

In 2017, Swami Prasad Maurya joined the Bharatiya Janta Party and was elected to the Legislative Assembly from the Padrauna constituency in Uttar Pradesh as a Bharatiya Janta Party candidate. As Cabinet Minister, he was responsible for labour and employment exchange, urban employment and poverty alleviation in Uttar Pradesh. Maurya was appointed Minister of Labour, Employment and Coordination on 21 August 2019 following the expansion of the Ministry of Yogi Adityanath. Swami Prasad Maurya quit the Bharatiya Janta party on January 11, 2022.
