The journey of life
Stevie Nicks was born on May 26, 1948 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. According to reports, her nickname Stevie comes from her childhood sound of calling “Stephanie” “tee-dee”. Nicks’ mother, Barbara, was a housewife, and her father, Jesse Nicks, a corporate officer, first met at Arizona State University. They became college sweethearts and married in 1947.
The close-knit Knicks family owns the Knicks’ grandfather, Aaron Knicks, a potential country star. Grandfather Nix handcrafted a guitar for young Steve and prepared her familiar selection from country music cannons. When she was five years old, Nix performed with him at the Social Gin Distillery. Around this time, her brother Christopher was born.
Raised by his father through corporate management, the Knicks traveled around Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and California. By 1963, the family had settled in suburban Los Angeles, and the Knicks attended Arcadia High School.
There she met her best friend Robin and joined the “Changing Times” band based on The Mamas and The Papas. Her tenure with the organization was brief. The Knicks soon moved to Palo Alto, California, where the Knicks attended Menlo Atherton High School. Here, Stevie met classmate Lindsey Buckingham, a guitarist and songwriter. The two share a close bond and have formed a strong musical partnership.
Stevie Nicks with Lindsey Buckingham
After graduating high school, Knicks quickly attended San Jose State College, but by 1968 she had dropped out. The Knicks relocated to Chicago again, but the Knicks chose to stay in California. Along with Buckingham, she built a small following with the local band Fritz. The group opened up for bigger bands like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix before disbanding in 1971.
By this time, the relationship between the Knicks and Buckingham was already deep. The couple continued to work together and soon signed a contract with Polydor Records. In 1972, they released Buckingham-Knicks, a well-known album. To get the job done, Nix alternates between maid, dental assistant, and waitress.
Meanwhile, rock band Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie battle band tension and lineup changes. In 1974, the band began experimenting with new recording facilities and arranged to visit Sound City Studio in the San Fernando Valley, the same studio where Stevie and Buckingham recorded their albums.
When producer Keith Olsen guided Fleetwood Mac on a tour of the facility, he showcased the studio’s sonic prowess by playing Buckingham-Nicks’ track “Frozen Love.” The band was drawn to Buckingham’s guitar sensibilities.

In October 2018, we got a look at some of the financial inner workings of Fleetwood Mac today, thanks to a lawsuit brought by on-and-off member Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham has sued his former bandmates after the band was abruptly fired from their 2018-2019 Live Nation tour.
Under the terms of their deal with Live Nation, each band member will receive $200,000 for each of 60 shows, for a total payout of $12 million, the lawsuit said. The amount could be as high as $14 million, depending on various attendance milestones and additional dates added in the future. Three months later, the lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount. Buckingham commented:
“We’ve all signed some agreements. I’m happy. I’m not trying to be fiddly at all. I’m trying to look at this with some level of empathy, some level of intelligence.”
In 2005, Stevie paid about $9 million for a gated 1.2-acre home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. She sold the home in December 2017 for $14 million. She ended up not finding a buyer at that price. She did sell the home in an off-market transaction, so an exact date and final price could not be obtained.
In 2004, she paid $3 million for a penthouse with ocean views in nearby Santa Monica. In 1981, Steve customized an 8,000-square-foot mansion in Paradise Valley, Arizona, not far from where she was born and raised. She gave the compound along with her brother and his family over the years. She sold the house in 2007 for $3 million.
