Sotomayor grew up Catholic in the East and South Bronx and in the Puerto Rican community. The family lived in a slum in the South Bronx until 1957 when they relocated to the well-preserved, racially and culturally diverse Bronxdale Houses in Soundview.
Sonia was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of seven and started receiving regular insulin injections. The Eucharist School in Soundview is Sotomayor’s alma mater. In high school, Sotomayor worked at a nearby retail store and a hospital.

Sonia has served as editor of the Yale Law Journal and executive editor of Yale University’s World Public Order Studies (a student magazine). After her sophomore year, she worked as a summer intern at the prestigious New York law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.
She filed a complaint with a prominent Washington, D.C. law firm in her third year, suggesting she was only given the opportunity at Yale because of affirmative action, which worked in Sonya’s favor.
