Smita Patil was born on October 17, 1955 (She was 31 when she died) in Pune. She was educated at Renuka Swaroop Memorial High School in Pune. Patil is a graduate of the Film and Television Academy in Pune, India. As a student, she had a passion for theatre. She has attended classes at every school. Before dabbling in film, Smita worked as a TV newscaster at Mumbai Doordarshan.

Smita made her film debut in 1975 with Shyam Benegal’s “Charandas Chor”. She made her Bollywood industry debut in 1974 with the film “Mere Saath Chal”. She is well known in the industry for her most famous roles having starred in the films “Manthan” (1977), “Bhumika” (1977), “Aakrosh” (1980), “Chakra” (1981), “Chidambaram” (1985) and “Mirch Masala” (1985). She also starred in films like Shakti and Namak Halaal, which are still popular.
