Nitish Bharadwaj married Smita Gate on March 14, 2009 after divorcing Monisha Patil in 2005. At the time, Smita was also divorced from her first husband. In an interview, Nitish talked about his meeting with Smita, saying,
Initially, we met each other as friends. We have a mutual family friend who asked to be considered for marriage. We thought about it and met a few more times after that. We found that we were very in tune, so we will go ahead with the marriage. “

Profession
In 1992, she became an IAS officer for Madhya Pradesh Cadre. In February 2009, she was appointed Executive Director of the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC). Within months of joining, she discovered a number of irregularities in the department’s operations. She asked for an investigative committee to be set up to look into the whole incident. No action was taken on her appeal, and she was ordered back to her cadre in May 2010. In an interview, her husband Nitish said,
The order came during her official visits to Brazil and Argentina. The SRTEPC Management Committee has written to the Ministry of Textiles (MoT) and the Department of Personnel Training (DoPT) stating that Smita’s services are not required. The ministry sent her back to Madhya Pradesh without raising any questions. We were really surprised to hear this. Smita has been assigned to SRTEPC. There is no rule in the rules that says she can join a private company on her own.
Smita submits RTI application at her counter; details of her transfer are requested. When her case was brought to the CAT, Judges Jog Singh and Sudhakar Mishra found that she was a representative and did not join the SRTEPC voluntarily. Smita’s attorney said,
The arguments and misrepresentations given by the DoPT in this case are appalling. No IAS officer anywhere can join a private company on the sole discretion of the NoC. ”
In 2015, she was appointed Managing Director of MP Financial Corporation, Indore.
