He has five brothers and two sisters. On November 30, 1987, he married Anita Paliwal. They have two daughters Kieran and Hemansi and a son Rahul. Shyam’s eldest daughter, Kiran, died of dehydration at the age of 18.

August 21, 2007 was the saddest day of my life when my 16-year-old daughter, Kiran, returned from school with a stomachache. Despite being taken to the hospital, she could not be rescued. This is a terrible loss. But I decided that my daughter will always be with me. I also decided to make everyone in the village proud of being the parents of a daughter. “
As soon as he became the head of the village, he started to create “Kiran Nidhi Yojna”. According to this Yojna, every time a girl is born in the village, 111 trees are planted and there is a fixed deposit of Rs 1 lakh. 31000 is Rs. 10,000 was provided by the girl’s family, and the rest by the village committee and other villagers. Shyam Sunder and people in his village also grow aloe vera and rose plants and use it to make various products. This helps create jobs for the people of Piplantri.
He also founded “Swajaldhara Yojana” to protect and save water and built around 1800 inspection dams in the village. He also promoted the “Open Defecation Free India” project in his village.
