On November 13, 2010, they finished their meal and set off again for Gugulethu. The couple’s taxi was hijacked as it turned onto the main road in Gugulethu. Two men armed with guns hijacked the cab and started driving the vehicle after ejecting taxi driver Zola Tongo out of the car after driving for a while. Twenty minutes after driving, Shi Ruien was also ejected from the car by the gunman. His money, wallet, designer watch and mobile phone were all taken by the gunman. A passerby helped Shrien contact police. Anni Dewani is kidnapped by robbers. On November 14, 2010, West Capton police found her body in the back seat of a taxi.

He also named his partner in crime “Mziwamadoda Qwabe” for his involvement in kidnapping and murder. Soon, Xolile Mngeni admitted in police interrogation that Anni Dewani was killed by Mziwamadoda Qwabe while the two were fighting over Anni’s handbag. Mziwamadoda Qwabe, who was quickly arrested by the police, confessed during his trial that the taxi was being hijacked to rob tourists. On the same day, Mziwamadoda Qwabe changed his account after a five-hour police cross-examination, saying that Anni Dewani’s husband Shrien had planned the murder of his wife. Soon after, the conspiracy middleman named Monde Mbolombo was arrested by the police on 18 November 2010. Meanwhile, police also seized CCTV footage of Monde Mbolombo talking to taxi driver Zola Tongo.

Monde Mbolombo was the one who arranged for the two gunmen to hijack the taxi for taxi driver Zola Tongo. Zola Tongo also admitted that Shrien Dewani, who paid them £1,400, was the mastermind behind the kidnapping and murder of his wife. Mziwamadoda Qwabe was sentenced to 25 years in prison in February 2011.
