Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit is an Indian professor who became the first female chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on February 7, 2022.

Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit was born on Sunday 15 July 1962 (Age 59; as of 2021) in St. Petersburg, Russia (Leningrad, former USSR). After enrolling in 1978, she pursued higher education at PN Dawan Adarsh Vidyalaya Matric High School in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. She was named best all-around student in 1978-80. After passing Std XII cum laude in 1980, she pursued a Diploma in Social Work at a summer school at California State University, Long Beach, USA. In 1983, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Social Psychology from Madras Presidential College; she received three gold medals and two awards to secure first place in the Bachelor of Arts degree. While at school and university, she has won several awards in debates, quizzes and speech contests at the regional, national and international levels. In 1985, she earned an M.A. in Political Science from the President’s College; she was second at the university. Received a University Grants Committee Fellowship from 1985 to 1988, and passed UGC-NET/JRF/SRF in 1986. She then obtained a Masters in International Relations from the JNU Indian Institute of International Studies (now the Institute of International Studies) in New Delhi in 1986. She was top of the A-level, she took first place and achieved 83.4% for her pre-doctoral degree. For her PhD, Ph.D. in International Relations at JNU’s Indian School of International Studies, she authored the thesis “Parliamentary and Foreign Policy in India – The Nehru Era”. In 1996, she obtained a post-doctoral diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies at Uppsala University, Sweden.

She started her teaching career in 1988 when she started working as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Goa. In 1992, she became a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Public Administration at the University of Pune. Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit was appointed as JNU’s 13th Vice-Chancellor on 7 February 2022, succeeding M Jagadesh Kumar for a five-year term, following the approval of her appointment by President Ram Nath Kovind. After Kumar’s five-year tenure as VC at JNU ends in 2021, he becomes chairman of the higher education regulator UGC (University Grants Council). What stands out behind Shantisree’s appointment as a VC is that she becomes the first woman to be named vice-chancellor of a prestigious university. Before becoming a VC at JNU, Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit was a professor at the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University. She has been an external examiner for M.Phil thesis and Ph.D. Published papers in various prestigious Indian colleges and universities. As of 2021, in addition to 8 M.Phil theses, 23 students have submitted their PhD theses under her guidance. In addition to authoring books, Pandit has published more than 170 research papers and articles in numerous prestigious political science and foreign policy journals.

- Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit, known for her close relationship with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), launched a controversy on Twitter on 29 January 2020 against Muslim students at JNU. In the tweet, she recalled her student days at university and called them jihadists, or Islamic militants, left-wing activists targeting JNU, bearded men and hijab-wearing girls.
- In March 2020, she expressed her hatred of Muslims with a tweet in which she referred to a study that showed a link between Covid-19 infection and testicular damage and infertility in men.
- In December 2020, when the Sikh community offered namaz to Muslims during the 2020-2021 Indian peasant protests in solidarity with Muslims, Pandit tweeted her Hindu right-wing political views, bringing the event to the fore. Tagged “Jihad Khalistani Alliance”.
