address
Shanann Watts and her family live in a five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 2825 Saratoga Trail in Frederick, Colorado. Watts brought the house here in April 2013 with a $392,709 loan. The house is valued at $583,500 (as of 2020).
The disappearance of the Watts family
At around 1:48 a.m. on August 13, 2018, Shanann was returning home from a business trip in Arizona; her friend and colleague Nickole Utoft Atkinson gave her a ride from the airport.
A worried Nickole went to her house around 12:10 pm after Shanann missed her OB-GYN appointment and business meeting and failed to respond to messages. After arriving at her home, when no one responded, she notified Chris, who was at work, while also reporting to the Frederick Police Department. At about 1.40pm, an officer arrived for a welfare check and spoke with Chris and discussed ways to find the missing family. During the welfare inspection, Chris allowed the police to inspect the house, but Shanann and the children were not found. The search team found Shanann’s wallet (which contained her phone and keys), her car (in the garage) and her wedding ring (in the couple’s bed). The next day, the FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation joined the investigation. Initially, Chris told police he did not know the whereabouts of Shanann, Bella or Celeste and had not seen his wife since leaving work at 5.15am on August 13. He has been interviewed by many news channels and pleaded with his family to go home, raising suspicions from the police.
Murder and Legal Action
On August 15, 2018, Chris was arrested after failing a polygraph and later confessed to the murder of Shanan. According to Chris, he had an affair with a woman named Nicole Kessinger, and when he asked her (Shanan) to separate, she strangled the child in response.
He claimed he strangled Shanan in a fit of rage before transporting the three bodies to a remote oil storage site where he worked. On the day of his arrest, he was fired. Authorities found the bodies on Aug. 16 on the property of his former employer, Anadarko Petroleum;
On Aug. 21, Watts was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, with one count for each child of “death of a child under the age of 12 and defendant in a position of trust”; wrongful termination of a pregnancy, and Three counts of tampering with a deceased human body. In his first court appearance, he was denied bail, and at a later hearing, bail was set at $5 million, with Chris ordered to pay 15 percent of the bond. On September 1, Watts posted $750,000 and was released pending legal process. In an interview with Dr. Phil, Chris’ lawyers claimed he had admitted to murdering Shanan following a dispute over the divorce. When he murdered her, Bella walked in and Chris told her her mother was sick. Chris loaded Shanann’s body into the back seat of his work truck, where his daughters don’t have car seats. He later strangled the two children one by one with a blanket in the back seat of the truck. On November 9, he pleaded guilty and, as part of a plea deal, did not offer the death penalty at the request of Shanann’s family. On November 19, Chris was sentenced to five life sentences: three counts, two unions, without parole; an additional 48 years for unlawfully terminating his wife’s pregnancy; and 36 years for three counts of tampering with the deceased’s body. Watts’ $5 million bond has since been revoked and he was immediately remanded in custody. On December 3, 2018, Chris was moved out-of-state for safety reasons and arrived at Dodge Correctional Facility, a high-security prison in Wopeng, Wisconsin, on December 5, 2018.
