Sardar Azmoun is an Iranian professional footballer who plays for the Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and the Iranian national team. In 2014, Azmoun made his first appearance for Iran at the age of 19. A regular for Meli, he played in the 2015 and 2019 AFC Asian Cups and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Azmoun is the second most valuable player in Iran’s history, behind Alireza Jahanbakhsh. He is both the youngest Iranian to score in the Champions League and the record holder for the most goals scored in the competition.

The journey of life
Azmoun was born into a Sunni family of Turkmen descent in Iran. Besides being fluent in Turkmen and Persian, he also enjoys horseback riding. In Turkmenistan he communicated with Kurban Berdiyev, the Turkmen coach of FC Rubin Kazan and FC Rostov.
Sardar learned to play football at the age of 9 during a family holiday in Turkmenistan. He started his career with Oghab Gonbad in Gonbad-e Kavus. In addition to playing volleyball, he was also invited to the Iranian national under-15 volleyball team. A few years later, he joined Shamoushak Gorgan and then Etka Gorgan, who was playing in Iran’s Division 1 at the time.
In Kazan, he decided to wear the number 69 in honor of his hometown’s license plate. Azmon said he was a Real Madrid fan and expressed interest in playing for Tractor Sazi in the Persian Gulf Pro League.
Khalil Azmoun is the son of former Iranian national volleyball player Khalil Azmoun and has coached several volleyball teams including Golgohar Sirjan and Javaheri Gonbad VC.
Azmoun decided to retire from international football at the age of 23 due to harsh criticism from fans following his withdrawal from the 2018 World Cup in Iran. The criticism caused his mother’s condition to worsen. Azmoun decided to retire to stay with his mother. After the break, he returned to the team.
Azmoun is a member of the World Turkmen Humanitarian Association.

Sepahan
- When Azmoun was 15, he joined Sepahan’s youth ranks. Sepahan, who won the 2011-12 Iranian Pro League and lifted the trophy, represented the club in an overseas pre-season friendly in Turkey. He never played for the club.
- In the 2012-13 season, Sardar was sought after by several European clubs, including Rubin Kazan, following Azmoun’s stellar performances with the Iranian youth team. At 17, Azmoun moved to Rubin Kazan, becoming Iran’s youngest veteran.
Rubin Kazan
- In January 2013, Russian team Rubin Kazan offered Azmoun a contract to join them; at the same time, two Iranian teams, Persepolis and Esteglar, expressed interest and offered to join Sepahan Sign a first-team contract. He chose to work with the Turkmen, say Kurban Berdiyev, and became the first Iranian footballer in the Russian Super League.
- In his first season at the club, he made eight appearances for the reserves, scoring two goals and receiving a yellow card. He also made multiple 18-man game day squads, but failed to make his senior team debut.

Rostov
- On 26 February 2015, Azmoun signed a three-and-a-half-month loan deal with relegated Russian Premier League club Rostov until the end of the season.
- Azmoun came off the bench in the 73rd minute and scored the winning goal in the 88th minute against Kuban Krasnodar on March 16. On 26 April 2015, Kazmon scored again in Rostov’s 2-2 draw with Dynamo Moscow. His stellar performance earned him a spot in the Russian Premier League’s Team of the Week. On June 7, he scored Rostov’s winning goal in the relegation play-off.
- Azmoon extended his loan deal with Rostov until the end of the 2015-16 season at the end of the 2014-15 season.
- On 22 August 2015, he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to CSKA Moscow. He has been linked with Premier League club Stoke City after an impressive first half of the season. He was also linked with a move to English side Everton earlier in March 2016.
