Sarah Palin is an American politician who served as the ninth governor of Alaska from 2006 to 2009. A Republican, she ran for vice president alongside presidential candidate Arizona Sen. Sarah Palin was born Sarah Lewis Heath on February 11, 1964 in Sampoint, Idaho, USA, to school secretary Sarah and science teacher and field coach Charles R. Heath). She has three siblings. Her family moved frequently during her childhood and eventually settled in Wasilla. She attended Wasilla High School, where she was an accomplished student with an interest in music and sports.
She is also director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A beautiful girl who won the Miss Wasilla pageant in 1984 and then came third in the Miss Alaska pageant. After high school, she attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and soon transferred to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu and later to Northern Idaho College.
She eventually completed a BA in Communication with a major in Journalism at the University of Idaho in Moscow in May 1987.
As she gave more interviews, the media and the public became increasingly skeptical of Palin’s credentials. Palin’s performance in an interview with Katie Couric was widely criticized; publications such as the Huffington Post cited candidates’ inability to cite John McCain’s support for financial regulation. After the interview, Palin’s polling numbers plummeted, and many Republicans expressed concern that she was becoming McCain’s political liability.
In addition to the hurdles as a public speaker, Palin faced a public image crisis when her teenage daughter Bristol announced she had a child out of wedlock. Palin’s anti-abortion stance was modeled after her daughter, who announced Bristol’s pregnancy and engagement to the baby’s father, Levi Johnston, on September 1, 2008, during the 2008 Republican National Convention.

In 2011, Sarah and Todd spent $1.75 million on a six-bedroom home in Scottsdale, Arizona. They sold the house in 2016 for $2.275 million. In 2015, they bought a second Scottsdale, Arizona property for just under $1 million. They started building a huge dream home but never finished the project.

Enter Alaska Politics
In 1992, Palin decided to enter politics. Running for the Republican nomination, she won a seat on the Wasilla city council by opposing the tax increase, and four years later she was elected mayor of Wasilla, defeating three-term incumbent John Stein by 651 votes to 440. As mayor, Palin slashed property taxes and cut spending.
She also raised the city’s sales tax by half a percentage point to build a popular sports complex and spend more on public safety. Mayor Palin also effectively used the congressional appropriations system to raise $26.9 million in such funds, according to Common Sense Taxpayers, an independent watchdog group.
Palin ran her first statewide campaign in 2002 for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, but lost by less than 2,000 votes. Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski then appointed Palin to chair the state’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003.
A year later, she resigned in protest of what she saw as a “lack of morals” among Alaska’s GOP leaders, including GOP Chairman Randy Rudridge. In 2006, Palin defeated Murkowski to win the Republican gubernatorial primary. In November 2006, she defeated former Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles 49% to 41% to win the general election.

Palin takes the national stage
On August 29, 2008, when John McCain selected the governor as his vice presidential running mate, Palin was embroiled in a political scandal at home and became a man of national attention. He formally introduced her at a campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio, and was nominated at the Republican National Convention on September 4.
With her nomination, Palin became the second woman to run for vice president in a major U.S. political party, and the first Republican woman to do so. At the party’s convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Sept. 3, Palin described herself as “just a regular hockey mom” and joked that “the only difference between a hockey mom and a bulldog is lipstick.”
Palin as governor
During his run for governor, Palin supported what he called “Bridges to Nowhere,” a $400 million plan to build bridges in remote communities in Alaska. Palin said the bridge was essential to local success, but once she became governor, she opposed it, citing rising costs and other priorities. “I’m grateful to Congress, but not to Alaska for that bridge to nowhere,” Palin said. “If we want a bridge, we’ll build it ourselves”.
Palin emphasized the ethics and openness of the government, whose management focused on education, public safety and transportation. A conservative Protestant, she has also served as an advocate for anti-abortion policies. Expressed disapproval of embryonic stem cell research; promoted belief in creationism, the idea that life was created by God, and should be taught in public schools alongside evolution courses; and supported Alaska’s decision to amend the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
