The journey of life
Sandra Oh was born on July 20, 1971 in Nepean, Ontario, the daughter of middle-class Korean immigrant businessman Oh Jun-su (John) and biochemist Jeon Young-Nam. Her parents had been to the area in the early 1960s.
She has a brother, Ray, and a sister, Grace, who grew up in a Christian home at Camwood Crescent, Nepean, and began performing and practicing ballet at the age of four to correct her pigeon pose. Stand up, Oh is one of the few young Asians in Nepean.
At the age of ten, Oh performed The Wizard of Woe in a class musical called The Canada Goose. Later, at Sir Robert Bodden High School, she founded the environmental club BASE (Bodden Active Environmental Students), leading the movement against the use of Styrofoam cups.
In high school, she was elected student body president. She also played the flute and continued her ballet training and acting studies, although she remembered that she was “not good enough to be a trained dancer” and eventually focused on acting.
She took drama classes, performed in school plays, and joined the drama club, where she was part of the Canadian improv game and comedy group Skit Row High. Against the advice of her parents, she turned down a four-year journalism scholarship at Carleton University to study drama at the National Academy of Drama in Montreal, at her own expense.
Oh told her parents that she would try acting for a few years and agreed that if she gave up, she would go back to college. After giving up going to college, she said she was “the only person in my family who didn’t have a master’s degree in some area”. Shortly after graduating from the National Drama School in 1993, she performed in David Mamet’s stage play Orianna in London, Ontario.
Around the same time, she had roles in two important biographical TV films of Chinese-Canadian women: as Vancouver-based writer Evelyn Lau in Evelyn Lau’s Diary, in which she was auditioned by more than 1,000 others, and as Adrienne Clarkson CBC biopic on Clarkson’s life.

Oh played Cristina Yang, a Type A cardiothoracic surgeon at Seattle’s Grace Hospital, in the tenth season of Grey’s Anatomy. According to TV Guide, at the end of the show, Oh was making $350,000 per episode and $8.4 million per season, depending on how many episodes a season had and whether Oh appeared in all of the episodes.
That salary earned her the fifth-highest-paid TV star at the time, a title she shared with “Grey’s Anatomy” co-stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, who were paid the same . Ah, the question everyone wants to know: what is Sandra Oh’s net worth. According to WoodGram, Oh has a net worth of $25 million, which seems about right considering how much she earned on Grey’s Anatomy and continues to earn on Grey’s Anatomy reruns.
Additionally, she’s starred in films like Under the Tuscan Sun and The Princess Diaries, which only added to her bank account. She also attended the 2019 Golden Globes. Even though awards shows don’t pay astronomical amounts, it still sounds like a penny for a few hours of work (some sources report that hosts are paid around $15,000 per awards show).
