Domestic team
In the first few days of his career, he was more of a faulty mid-range bowler than a batsman. His cricket career started with the Rohinton Baria Trophy at the University of Mumbai. He played his first Ranji game for Mumbai in the 1975-76 season.
When he started his career, he was an unconventional member of the team. In 1979, after running 145 points in the Ranji Cup semifinals, he became a permanent member of the team. In this match, Mumbai lost their first four wickets in 72 overs when Sandeep batted in sixth. His inning helped Mumbai advance to the final. After representing Edmonton in the Middlesex League in 1979 and 1980, he represented the Somerset B team the following year. In the 1979-80 season, India played a home series against Australia and Pakistan, and Sandeep was selected to play the tour with both teams. He represented the Western Conference team, scoring 44 and 23 points against Australia. Next are 68 and 71 against Pakistan. Those innings earned him a place in India’s last two Test matches against Pakistan. He took his top first prize against Saurashtra at the Wankhede Stadium two weeks before the match. When he came out to bat the next day, he was unbeaten in 45 games before lunch. He went on to score 210 times on 205 balls, including seven sixes and 19 fours. The final six he struck cleared the field and landed on the hockey field behind it.
He then appeared in the Orioles Test against England later that season. He was drafted into the team during the 1980-81 Australian Tour. He had 116 points against South Australia before the Test began. This South Australian team has players like Rodney Hogg. Next up were 60 and 97 points against Queensland, who on the other hand had players as star-studded as Jeff Thompson. He made his ODI debut against Australia in December 1980, where he scored 64 points and won the “Player of the Match” award. In 1981, during a Test series against Australia, Patil was injured at the age of 65 after being hit in the throat by Rodney Hogg. He continued to bat after that and was injured after being hit in the right ear by their fast bowler Len Pascoe.
But in the second innings, he continued to bat at the insistence of team captain Sunil Gavaska as India lost by one innings. Two weeks later, he scored 174 points, his highest Test result, in the second Test match against Australia in Adelaide in January 1981. The score was on 130 runs as India lost their first four wickets. It was the Indian’s highest score in Australia at the time, which included 22 fours and a six Bruce Yardley score on the middle wicket. Interestingly, he bowled with Kapil Dev in Australia against New Zealand in March 1981. He was later knocked out after the 1981-82 home series against England, but was picked up shortly after. In the final series, he scored his second 100 percent. India were on the brink of an innings defeat when Sandeep added 96 runs with Kapil Dev. In the following game, he hit Ian Botham for four and three on the last two balls of the first round after picking up a new ball. In the following game, he hit six acid balls from Bob Willis and went from 73 to 104 on nine. He played 129 games until the end of the game before the rain interrupted. In September 1982, in his next hundred matches, he played against Sri Lanka in Chennai. However, he was eliminated by the team mid-season. As India toured the West Indies, he went on a 121-match unbeaten run against Karnataka in the Ranji final, and Mumbai’s goal on the final day was to declare the match. In June 1983, when the Cricket World Cup began, Patil scored 216 goals in eight matches. He scored 51 from 32 balls in Manchester’s semi-final against England while chasing 214 over 60 rounds and helped India reach the final, where they face West Indies.
In the final, he scored a gritty 26 and helped India to their maiden Cricket World Cup title. He became the fifth leading wicketkeeper in the Indian Championships.
In the 1983-84 season in the Ranji Cup, he ran for 609 points. The last century of his career came against Pakistan in Faisalabad in October 1984. He scored a gritty 41 against England in Derry in December 1984, but was later knocked out of the next Test at Eden (Kolkata) due to disciplinary action alongside Kapil Dev. In the next series, he was replaced by Mohammad Azharuddin, who had three centuries in three Tests. In 1986, he was recalled for several more one-day races. In September 1986, Patil announced his retirement from international cricket after a match against Australia in Mumbai. He then returned to captain Madhya Pradesh and scored 185 points against Mumbai in 1990. After retiring from cricket, he coached the Indian national team and the Indian A team.
He also coached quasi-cricket nation Kenya, which surprised everyone by reaching the semi-finals at the 2003 ICC World Cup.
On September 27, 2012, he became President of the BCCI, a position he held until September 2016.
