Sadashivrao Bhau’s Early Years
In 1746, a mission was assigned to Babuji Naik and Fateh Singh Bhonsle of Karnataka, but they failed and were later assigned to Sadashivrao Bhau. On December 5, 1746, Bhau left Pune with his political advisers Mahadoba Purandare and Sakharam Bapu and fought his first campaign in Karnataka, which lasted until May 1747. In January 1747, Bhau won his first battle at Ajra, south of Kolhapur, in which 36 Parganas were captured by Marathon. He annexed the cities of Kittur, Parasgad, Gokak, Yadwad, Bagalkot, Badami, Navalgund, Umbal, Giri, Torgal, Haliyal, Harihar and Basavapatna.
After Mahadjipant Purandare resigned, Bhau became Diwan of Peshwa. He won several battles against Yamaji Shivdev, won the Battle of Udgir (1760), and captured the Daulatabad fort. One of the most notable battles under his leadership was the “Third Battle of Panipat (1761)”.
The Third Battle of Panipat (1761)
In January 1760, Nanasaheb Peshwa learned of the invasion of the Indian Punjab region by Ahmad Shah Abdali (leader of the Afghan army). All Muslims in northern India are allied with Abdul in the name of religion. Nanasaheb chose Sadashivrao to lead the Maratha army to Delhi and fight Abdali.
On March 14, 1760, his army of 45,000-60,000 men began their journey from Padur, later joined by non-combatants, including family members, who wished to make a pilgrimage to the Hindu holy site in northern India . Subsequently, Marathon of Holka and Sindia joined his army.
Bhau used a hit-and-run strategy, which also helped him win previous battles. He assembled a force of 10,000 infantry and 50 artillery pieces. Holkar and Scindia sought to influence Bhau to ally with Rajput, Sikh, Shuja Uddora and Muslim leaders in northern India. The Rajputs denied supporting him in the fighting; because Marathon intervened a lot in Rajputana’s internal and political affairs.
Holka and Sindia ask the powerful Rajasthan leader Surajmar to join the fight. Suraj Mal didn’t trust Bhau, so Holkar and Scindia assured him honor for Suraj Mal’s safety. Suraj Mal accepted their offer and agreed to join the Maratha force. There was a shortage of food and other supplies due to the uncooperative Jat and Rajput kings. Bao’s bossy attitude made the situation even more dire as he failed to convince the regional king to support him in the war. He even decided to arrest Raja Suraj Mal, who was about to form an alliance with Marathon. Suraj Mal returned to Ballabhgarh Fort, denying further support for him.
Bhau even rejected Sikh proposals for union, and as a result, he also received no supplies from the Punjab. The Maratha camp reached Delhi on 1 August 1760, but due to food shortages, they thereafter moved about 110 km north of Delhi to Karnal and occupied the village of Kunjpura on the west bank of the Yamuna, Bau Here killed the entire Afghan battalion at Kunjpura Fort. Abdulli had crossed the east bank of the Yamuna, so he could not save his battalion; because the Yamuna was flooded.
Unable to bear the setback, Abdali decided to cross the river at all costs. On October 17, 1760, he began to move out of Shahdala with his army and troops. A villager exchanging money showed them a path across the Yamuna River in Baghpat, a town between Delhi and Panipat, on the east bank of Yamuna. Marathon failed to stop them and established a defensive force at Panipat.
Abdali managed to block Maratha’s passage south to Delhi. By the end of November 1760, Abduri had cut off almost all food supplies to the Maratha camp. On January 13, 1761, Marathi chiefs begged Bhau to let them die on the battlefield instead of starving. The next day, the Marathas left their camp and marched towards the Afghan camp. On January 14, 1761, Marathi and Afghan forces went head-to-head.
By the afternoon, the Marathas had nearly won the battle, but the whole situation changed when Vishwasrao (Bhau’s nephew) died on the battlefield. Seeing his nephew dead, Bhau walked towards the enemy. The Afghans attacked him, and he was also killed on the battlefield by Abdul’s forces.
aftermath of the battle
According to some sources, after three days of fighting, Bhau’s headless body was found among a pile of corpses. His head was later found and hidden by Afghan soldiers. His body was cremated according to Hindu rituals and his ashes were taken to Visayan in Kashgar.
And according to some other sources, perhaps, Bhau survived the battle and lived his life in secret elsewhere. Bhau’s wife, Parvatibai, refused to accept the fact that her husband had died because his body was never found. She never lived the life of Bhau’s widow.
