RD Burman is an Indian music director, composer and singer. Popularly known as “Panchamda”, he is considered one of the preeminent composers in the Indian music scene.

RD Burman (full name Rahul Dev Burman) was born on June 27, 1939 (55 years old at the time of death) In Calcutta, the Presidential Palace of Bangladesh (now Calcutta), British India. His zodiac sign is cancer.
He attends a school in West Bengal. His father first put him in training under Tabla Maestro Brajen Biswas. He was tabla trained by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ashish Khan’s sarod and Samta Prasad in Mumbai. Burman considers Salil Chowdhury his mentor.
Family, Caste and Wife
He belongs to a musically rich Bengali family. His father, Sachin Dev Burman (SD Burman) was a music director and singer. His mother, Meera Dev Burman, was a lyricist.
Burman met one of his fans, Rita Patel, in Darjeeling. She made a bet with her friends that she would go to the movies with Pancham. Rita and Berman married in 1966 and divorced in 1971.
He then married Asha Bhosle in 1979. However, at the end of his life, they did not live together.
RD Burman has three stepchildren; Varsha Bhosle (singer), Anand Bhosle (film producer), Hemant Bhosle (film score composer).
The three are Asha’s children from her first marriage to Ganpat Lau Bosler.

At the age of nine, he composed his first song “Aye Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa”, which was used by his father in the film “Funtoosh (1956)”.
He composed another song “Sar Jo Tera Chakraaye” which his father included in the movie “Pyaasa (1957)”.

He then started assisting his father SD Burman. Together with his father he made films such as Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963), Bandini (1963), Ziddi (1964), Guide (1965) and Teen Devian (1965) year). In 1959, he started his career as a music director with the film Raz, which for some reason was never released. His first film as a music director was “Chhote Nawab (1961)”.
His first success as a music director was the film “Teesri Manzil (1966)”. He made his first musical director role in a Telugu film with the film Rocky (1987).
He made his Tamil film debut as a music director with the film Poo Mazhai Pozhiyuthu (1987).

- His nickname Pancham is a legend in itself. Some stories claim that when he was a child, his cries sounded similar to the fifth note (Pa), the G scale of sheet music. Another said that when he used to cry, he had cried with five different notes; because “Pancham” means five in Bengali. Another legend says that once Ashok Kumar came to visit baby Rahul, he kept saying the syllable “Pa”, so he nicknamed the boy “Pacham” .
- During his childhood, his father, SD Burman, asked him, “Who do you want to be?” Pancham replied, “I’m good at cycling and playing the harmonica, and I can compose my own tunes.”
- He knows how to play the harmonica. Pancham played this instrument for the composition “Hai Apna Dil To Aawara” in his father’s film “Solva Saal (1958)”.

- Mehmood first approached SD Burman for his film “Chhote Nawab (1961)”, but SD Burman rejected the offer on the grounds that he did not have time. During a meeting with SD Burman, he noticed that Pancham was playing Tabla and signed him as the music director for the film.
- After separating from his first wife, Rita Patel, he composed the song “Musafir Hoon Yaaron” from the film “Parichay (1972)” in a hotel.

- He lost his father in 1975. After his death, he wrote many hits for films such as Sholay (1975), Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977), Kasme Vaade (1978), Khubsoorat (1980).
- In the late 1980s, Pancham was overshadowed by Bappi Lahiri and several other music composers. Many of his works failed, and filmmakers no longer chose him as his film composer.
- In 1986, he composed four songs for the film “Izazat”, written by Gulzar and sung by Asha Bhosle. His work has been highly praised, and both Gulzar and Asha have won national awards for the song “Mere Saman” in the film.
- His Latin American rock album “Panthera” was released on January 6, 1987. The album was recorded in the US in 1983/1984.

- The story of how Pancham met Kishore Kumar is fascinating. He was in a studio and he saw Kishore sitting on the wall of the studio. Kishore was wearing a scarf, hat, and a black stick in his hand. Kishore mimics everyone passing by like a monkey. When Burman and his allies went to the studio, Kishore followed them to the studio. Describing the scene, Pancham said: “jo jo gana gatey the unka satyanash karte hue woh khud gaana gaane laga (destroy the one who used to sing, he starts singing himself).” When Pancham asked him why he did it, Kishore Answered: “I’m an orphan. No one takes care of me. Please give me a chance’. Pancham mocks Kishore and that’s how their friendship started.
- He has composed music for nearly 331 films, including 392 Hindi, 31 Bengali, 2 Oriya, and Tamil and Marathi films. He has also composed music for five TV series in Marathi and Hindi.
- His singing style was heavily influenced by American singer and trumpeter Louis Armstrong.
- He used to call Gulzar “Safed Kauwa (White Crow)” because Gulzar always wore red, and Gulzar used to call him “Lal Kauwa (Red Crow)” because Pancham liked red.
- He was so obsessed with music that even a dream came true. Journalist Chaitanya Padukone, who sees Pancham as his mentor, described an instance in which he would be interviewed when he suddenly stood up to his arranger, Babloo Chakravorty, and told him what he thought. Chaitanya added, “He would do it a lot – stop in the middle of a sentence and go talk to Babloo-da, say ‘Yahaan aisa music rakho, yahaan quiet rakho’ and come back to the interview.”
- Chaitanya Padukone also wrote his biography titled “RD Burmania: Panchamemoirsa”. The book was published in 2016.
- He’s always been open and honest about the sources of his music. His song “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from the movie “Sholay (1975)” was inspired by “Say You Love Me (by Demis Roussos)”.
- He uses different techniques to create his scores, and in “Mehbooba Mehbooba” in the film “Sholay (1975)” he blows air into musical bottles to form his own rhythm. And for Chura Liya in “Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973),” he used saucers and cups to create jingling sounds.
- He is considered the first music director to combine Indian semi-classical music with guitar playing. The song “Raina Beeti Jaye” from “Amar Prem (1972)” features guitar and Santoor.
