Ramchandra Siras is an Indian writer and linguist specializing in Marathi literature. The inspiration for the popular Bollywood film Aligarh (2015) came from the life of Dr. Silas as Head of the Modern Indian Languages Department at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Ramchandra Silas was born in 1948 (Age 62; at the time of death) in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Silas grew up in Nagpur, where he spent most of his childhood and adulthood. After completing his studies in Nagpur, he entered the University of Nagpur to study linguistics and psychology. He completed his postgraduate studies in psychology at Hislop College in Nagpur. He also studied clinical psychology at the Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchikanke. In 1985, he completed a PhD in Madkholkar’s 20 political novels, considered by many to be a very rare and difficult subject. He has also published an English-language seminar proceedings on comparative literature. In 1988, he joined Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as a professor. Before joining AMU, Dr. Siras worked as a research assistant in the Department of Linguistics, Ranchi University. In 1998, Ramchandra Siras was named AMU Reader of Modern Indian Languages. He later went on to serve as Head of the Modern Indian Languages Department at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Gay Controversy and Suspensions
Ramchandra Siras, who has reportedly been gay since his teens, allegedly had an affair with a rickshaw driver (Abdul) in Aligarh . On February 8, 2010, he was filmed having consensual sex with the rickshaw driver when two local cable reporters filmed him having sex with the rickshaw driver. Later, reporters broke into Dr. Silas’s room to continue filming, while Dr. Silas in the picture begged them to stop filming. On February 9, 2010, AMU suspended him for “serious misconduct.” AMU public relations officer Rahat Abrar said in announcing the suspension of Dr. Siras,
Silas was caught on camera having sex with a rickshaw driver. He was suspended on the order of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor PK Abdul Aziz. ”
Dr. Siras later appealed his suspension to the Allahabad High Court and on 1 April 2010, the verdict was found in his favour and he was reinstated as a professor. At one point, Dr. Siras, speaking about his homosexuality and his relationship with AMU, said,
I have spent twenty years here. I love my university. I have always loved it and will continue to do so no matter what. But I wonder if they don’t love me anymore because I’m gay. ”

On April 7, 2010, Dr Ramchandra Siras was found dead in mysterious circumstances in his apartment in Aligarh. Initially, police said it was a suicide. However, after his autopsy report revealed poison in his system, police registered a murder and arrested six people. The case was later closed as police were unable to gather any substantial evidence.

Silas is also very fond of knitting. On the way from the dormitory to the institute, he always knitted jumpers. He carried a bag with yarn in it. He said he was knitting sweaters for his nieces. ”
- Friends and relatives close to him say that Dr. Silas has no luxury and that the only time he is willing to spend is watching Hindi movies in the cinema. Since he has no close friends, he mostly goes to the cinema alone.
- According to reports, Ramchandra Silas suffered from epileptic seizures, so he frequently fell and injured his forehead.
- Hansal Mehta’s 2015 Bollywood film “Aligarh” was inspired by the life of Dr. Ramchandra Siras, in which famous Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpai played the role of Ramchandra Siras. The film received critical reviews.
