Raja Jon Vurputoor Chari was born on Friday 24 June 1977 (Age 44; as of 2021) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, and grew up in Cedar Falls, Blackhawk County, Iowa, USA. His zodiac sign is Cancer. In 1995, he completed his studies at Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia, USA. In 1999 he received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Science (Minor in Mathematics) from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2001, he completed a Draper Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering. After graduation, he received undergraduate pilot training at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. He also participated in F-15E Strike Eagle training at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.

Raja is married to Holly Schaffter Chari, and the couple have three children together. In an interview, Raja said of his wife,
She kept our family going, she kept me going, basically the entire squadron and the entire unit, and then also day in and day out for the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is an amazing part of my life. Obviously the best decision I’ve ever made and I’m lucky to have found her. “

From a religious standpoint, I grew up Catholic. Much to my father’s credit, I didn’t feel like I was any different from everyone else. I think they do a good job saying it’s totally normal. Growing up, it took me a while to realize that my dad wasn’t Catholic either. He is Hindu. never practiced. Never been baptized in church. He always goes (to church) with us. We always go as a family…my dad never got rid of his Hindu roots. It wasn’t until I was growing up that I realized he wasn’t Catholic and the church we grew up in was not the church he grew up in. “
Profession
In November 2003, he was selected as an F-15E pilot with the 90th Fighter Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, Pacific Air Forces. In 2006 he was designated as an F-15E IP at RAF 494FS in Lakenheath, England, United Kingdom, followed by designation at the US Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland in 2007 (as an Air Force Communication Officer). In December 2008, he joined the United States Air Force (USAF) as an F-15 Experimental Test Pilot, 40 FTS, Eglin Air Force Base. In December 2012, he joined the US Air Force as SAF/RCO Program Manager, and in June 2015, he was named 461st Flight Test Squadron Commander/F-35 Integrated Test Force Director. In June 2017, he joined NASA as an astronaut candidate.
He then served as Joint Test Team Director at the Commerical Crew Program in 2019, and began as Title SpaceX Crew3 mission commander in June 2020. He was selected in December 2020 to be part of Team Artemis, a group of astronauts. The team was formed to make way for lunar missions to send the first woman and the next man to walk on the lunar surface in 2024. In the same year, he was selected into NASA’s astronaut team “Group 22” for the space mission “SpaceX Crew-3” which will be carried out on November 11, 2021. He commanded the mission and was accompanied by United’s Kayla Barron and Tom Mashburn with National and Germany’s Matthias Maurer.

I realized in my head that I really wanted to fly a plane… By high school, my goal was basically to get into the Air Force Academy. achieve flight goals. I learned more about the idea of being a test pilot and you can do both. I love being a test pilot. That’s all I think. I can live out my passion and do what I love. Once I became a test pilot, it was my first shock – holy cow – that it was possible to become an astronaut. It’s not actually a lofty goal, but something I can strive to achieve. When he was about 9 or 10 years old, he took some curtain hooks that I didn’t use and bent them into different shapes…he would take them out and sell them to the kids in the neighborhood and tell them they were different types of planes. Other kids always buy them and they just play together. “
