Facts/trivia
- In his spare time, he likes to play golf, swim, play chess, read and visit art exhibitions.
- One of his hobbies includes hunting, which he usually hunts in Sologne, a place popular with hunters.
- He is the heir to his family’s aerospace and software company Dassault Group, which began during World War I, when his grandfather Marcel founded Dassault Aviation and sold propellers. The group manufactures the famous Rafale fighter. The family owns a winery. In 2018, Forbes estimated the Dassault family’s worth at $22.6 billion.
- Olivier Dassault founded the “Association d’Entraide” to support the elderly and vulnerable groups in the Oise department.
- In July 2002 he co-founded the “Génération Entreprise” with Jean-Michel Fourgous and Hervé Novelli. Génération Entreprise, a parliamentary research group, chaired it from October 2012 until his death. The Génération Entreprise is associated with 120 members of parliament.
- He also chaired the French and Saudi Arabian Friendship Group to the National Assembly during the Fourteenth Legislative Session.
- Speaking in an interview about his photography style and the inspiration behind his photos, he said,
Several great photographers have rated me. I’m a colorist, but I admire black and white masters: Ronis, Steichen, Doisneau. Brassaï’s love of sidewalks and walls opened my eyes to street art. I was also moved by the way Lucien Clergue, Sarah Moon and Helmut Newton presented the corpses. There are many other artists to mention, such as Bettina Rheims, Peter Beard, Olivier Föllmi… not to mention Ernst Haas, which is especially important for understanding my turn to abstract art. I love treating faces like landscapes, with an idyllic touch! Architecture and my taste for modern art later led me to explore the beauty inherent in the visual harmony of a building’s façade, balcony or row of chairs. Getting rid of the need to paint has given me a more abstract vision of everyday life. “
- He was shy as a teenager and started photography by clicking pictures of his sister and girlfriend. Soon, he fell in love with photography and decided to become a photographer. However, his parents wanted him to become an engineer and set other goals for him. The condition they gave him was that he could do whatever he wanted, instead that he should be an engineer first. Speaking about this in an interview, he said,
When I first started, I was a very shy teenager and took this device to help me express myself to the outside world – young girls! (laugh). The camera has become my accomplice, my intimate partner, a part of me. My curiosity and taste in photography is much higher than in other disciplines. I have tried every way! Then, when I started showing my images, the recognition and sharing that followed, just established my need to create and express myself in this medium. This shows that I have chosen the right path. “
- Olivier Dassault was also the composer of the National Assembly’s national anthem, giving the institution another side of his creative personality.
