Wiki/Biography
Neeraj Chopra was born on Wednesday 24 December 1997 (24 years old; as of 2021) in Kandra Village, Panipat District, Haryana. His zodiac sign is Capricornus. He attended DAV College in Chandigarh, but he dropped out and went on to graduate through letters from Kurukshetra University, Haryana. In an interview, he shared how he became interested in throwing the javelin. He further said,
As an obese child, I weighed 80kg when I was 11 years old. To get in shape, I visited Panipat Stadium during my holiday. My pocket money is about 30 rupees and many days I don’t even have money for a glass of juice. I took the bus about 17 km to the stadium and returned with my uncle who works in Panipat city. Although I’m running to lose weight, I don’t particularly like it. I used to stand at a distance and watch my senior Jaiveer, who represented Haryana in the javelin, practice. One day, at his request, I tried the javelin. I found that I could throw it far, and that realization helped me regain my self-esteem. “

Profession
Initially, he started his professional training in javelin at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Panchkula in Haryana. He then practiced at the track and field nursery at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana. In an interview, he shared that Indian javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary was the first to discover his talent. He said,
There are very few facilities to practice javelin in Panipat, the least of which is the dirt track we ran over. When I decided to get back to training seriously, I transferred to a sports nursery in Panchkula. I am 14 years old. I practiced on a synthetic track for the first time and trained with athletes competing at the national level. In 2012, I played my first junior national team competition in Lucknow and broke the national record with a time of 68.46m. “
He further spoke about the lack of sports facilities in his village. He said,
I left home when I was 14 due to lack of facilities. My formal education was disrupted after the 9th class. My dream is that the villagers don’t have to move to the city like I moved to Panchkula. Athletes in Haryana have triumphed at national, international and Olympic level, but my village still has no playground. Whenever I stay there, I need to practice on the road. If we are going to be an Olympic nation, every village should have a stadium and hire coaches from the Patiala National Sports Academy, where I train now. “
Later, he participated in various national and international javelin competitions. He has won many medals in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships, etc. In an interview, talking about winning the medal, he said,
After my silver medal in the Guntur Youth Nationals, I was selected for the World Youth Championships in Ukraine. In 2015, I was selected for the Kerala National Games. In training camp, I practiced for the first time with the better quality javelins used internationally. Inferior javelins are heavier and can lead to injuries: those with better materials will stay in the air longer. I threw it to a distance of 73.45 meters. In the same race, my senior Rajend Singh from Haryana set the national record with a distance of 82.23. “
In 2016, he was selected as a junior officer of the Indian Army with the rank of Naib Subedar in the 4 Rajputana Rifles superior unit. He then trained at the Mission Olympic Wing and the Army Sports Academy in Pune. Later, he was promoted from Naib Subedar to Subedar.
He was chosen as India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games. In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, he qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to be held in 2021.
He has studied with Naseem Ahmad, Klaus Bartonietz, Gary Calvert and Werner Daniels. In an interview, his then-coach Naseem Ahmad, recalling Neeraj’s initial practice days, said,
He would sit on his notebook and get tips from them. He never shied away from training and always set the goal of winning in the group stage every day. It was our greatest joy to see him win gold on the biggest stage today. I’m sure he will be with javelin throwers from other countries, just like he is with his seniors and friends after training or after games. “
His personal trainer is Uwe Hohn from Germany and his army trainer is Raj Kumar.
