Narendra Giri, one of the most respected Hindu religious leaders in India, was awarded the title “Mahant”. Giri was twice elected National Chairman of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), the highest decision-making body for the 13 recognized Akharas of Hindu monasteries in India. He is the secretary of Panchayati Akhara Shri Niranjani and the Mahant of Baghambari Gaddi and Bade Hanuman temples in Uttar Pradesh. The saint died after suicide. His death caused a national uproar and he was investigated by UP Police’s 18 SIT team and later the CBI.

Narendra Giri is one of the most revered and learned saints among the prophets and saints of India. Giri held many positions during his priesthood. He was the secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhara Niranjani, one of the ancient Sangha in India. He also kept the Mahat at Prayagraj at Bagan Barrigadi and Bad Hanuman Temple. On March 14, 2015, Mahat Narendra Giri was elected president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, the highest decision-making body of 13 recognized Hindu monasteries in India, and he did not want to let Narendra Giri in the chaos caused by former chief Mahat Gyan Das. hold this position. The incident led Anand to accuse his guru of selling Baghambari Mutt’s property and other financial irregularities at the monastery. He also tried to frame Narendra Giri in the death of Ashish Giri, former secretary of Niranjani Akhara, whose body was found in the monastery in November 2019. However, after a 13-day feud, he returned to Mahant and formally apologised to him by hugging his feet. Narendra Giri reportedly forgave Anand and gave him access to the arena and monastery grounds, but it has not been confirmed whether Anand was deported.

Criticism of two Indian masters
In May 2019, Narendra Giri, who headed Akhara Parishad at the time, was accused of bashing Indian saffron masters Baba Ramdev and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Ravi Shankar), he called them “business baba”. Swami Chin Mayanand case
Around the same time, a month after Giri publicly criticized Swami’s behavior, Narendra Giri made headlines for supporting Swami Chinmayanand, who was arrested in a sexual harassment case. In September 2019, Mahat’s representative Akhara Parishad condemned Swami Chinmayanand’s actions, saying in a statement that his people wanted a “fair trial” in the case. Apparently, he also considered expelling Chinmayanand. A month later, in October, Chief Akhara Parishad made a sudden U-turn and issued a statement in support of Chinmayanand. Giri claimed that Swami was involved in the racketeering case and that the sexual harassment allegations against Swami were a conspiracy. Mahant Giri said in a statement,
We will now announce our support for Chinmayanand at the ABAP’s Haridwar Conference. He is capable of handling this matter legally, but we will continue to support him as a community. “

Mahat Narendra Giri, chairman of India’s largest Sadhus organization, was found hanging from a ceiling fan by a rope in the room of Baghambari Gaddi Mutt in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on September 20, 2021. A post-mortem report confirmed he died of asphyxiation. After the autopsy, Mahant’s body was taken to the procession in Sangam city and finally to the Badhanuman Temple. On September 22, 2021, around 3pm, the saints rested in the baa samadhi under the lemon tree, at Shrimath Baghambari Gaddi Mutt.
The Supreme Prophet died mysteriously in his room, and police found an alleged suicide note in which Mahant blamed his suicide on his key disciple Anand Giri and two others – Adhya Tiwari, Bade Hanuman monastery Mahant and his son, Sandeep Tiwari. Mahant Giri wrote in his notes:
I live with dignity, not with humiliation, that’s why I’m going to kill myself. “
Police also revealed that the note said Mahante was forced to commit suicide after he was “blackmailed” by Anand Giri for “a deformed picture with a girl”. Giri wrote in his notes:
I came to know that Anand Giri was going to share with the public a morphed photo showing me with a girl. Anand asked me how many people will you prove your innocence to once these allegations go viral? I live a dignified life and I cannot stand the humiliation I will suffer…”
Narendra Giri also named in his notes his successor, the Mahant of Baghambari Gaddi – Balbeer Giri, who was one of his disciples. According to police, the suicide note also mentioned that Mahante committed suicide on September 13, but he did not do so. Two days after Mahat’s death, police reportedly revealed that Giri had ordered celphos poison, the pills they found at the alleged suicide scene. The report also said it was unclear whether Mahant ordered the poison for himself or for other reasons.
The investigation into the alleged suicide was carried out by an 18-person SIT team from UP Police, who also found a one-minute video recorded by Narendra Giri before his death. In the video, Mahant also blamed Anand Giri and Adiya Tiwari. Following Giri’s death, Anand Giri filed an FIR against Anand Giri on charges of abetting suicide, and the disciple was arrested from Haridwar the following day. He was interrogated for 12 hours; however, the defendant denied all charges against him and repeatedly claimed he was framed in Mahat’s murder plot, the report said. Anand was placed in judicial custody for 14 days two days after Giri’s death.
Following Mahat Giri’s death on 23 September, the head of Niranjani Akhara, Kailashanand Giri, delayed the appointment of his successor, Balbeer Giri, to the Mahat positions of Baghambari Gaddi Mutt of Prayagraj and Bade Hanuman Mandir, citing the alleged false suicide note. India’s central government has also formally issued a notice to the CBI to investigate Mahaant’s death, three days after his alleged suicide. On 5th October, Mahamandeleshwar, Kailashanand Giri announced Balbeer Giri as Mahat Narendra Giri’s successor and officially appointed him as the new head of Baghambari Math.
On November 20, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet showing that Narendra Giri committed suicide after being unable to deal with severe trauma after being threatened by three suicide defendants – Anand Giri (Anand Giri, Adhya Prasad Tiwari and Sandeep Tiwari. According to the CBI report, Mahant spoke with some of his disciples about Anand Giri threatening him to publish clips of Narendra Giri with some women. The charge sheet also mentions that in Mahant A few days ago, Mahant indirectly asked some of his disciples about the effects of taking Celphos, and he also asked his disciple Sarvesh Dwivedi to get him a nylon rope from the market.

- As head of the ABAP, Narendra Giri passed a resolution in 2020 to launch a campaign for the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to “liberate the Hindu temples of Varanasi and Mathura”.
