Gaurav Arya was born on Monday 25 September 1972 (A sort of48; as of 2020), in Delhi, India.
He graduated from St Stephens College, Derry, in 1992 with an honours degree in History. Thereafter, in 1993, he passed the SSB examination and joined the Indian Army Short Service Commission as a second lieutenant. In 1999, he voluntarily retired from the Indian Army for medical reasons. After leaving the military, he started his business career with an MBA in Marketing and Sales from IITC in Lucknow.

After passing the SSB exam, Gaurav Arya joined the Indian Army as a short-serving officer. He belongs to the 57th Short Service Committee (non-technical). In April 1993, Gaurav started his training at the Chennai Officers Training Academy (OTA) and was admitted to the Jessami Company of the academy.
After completing his training, Gaurav Arya was appointed as a Second Lieutenant of the 17th Battalion, Kumaon Regiment, Indian Army.
Until 2006, officers recruited under the Short Service Commission Scheme had a five-year term, which could be further extended to five and four years. After five years in the Indian Armed Forces, Gaurav had to retire early in 1999 for medical reasons.

After retiring from the Indian Army Major, Gaurav Arya obtained an MBA in Marketing and Sales before entering the corporate world. Before joining Republic TV Network in March 2017 as Senior Advisory Editor for Strategic Affairs, he held various executive positions at HCL, Hutch (now Vodafone), Wipro, Ernst & Young, Spice Retail Ltd, Sterea Infratech Ltd and Smart Group.
Open Letter to Burhan Wani and Media Debut
In July 2016, Gaurav Arya wrote an article for Swarajya, “An Open Letter to Burhan Wani,” criticizing people protesting what happened to Hezbollah terrorist Burhan Wani. In his letter, he wrote that the situation in Kashmir and how the separatist movement can buy nothing for the people of Kashmir. Separatists in Kashmir feed on human blood and send young Kashmiris like Burhan Wani to face the army, he said.
He concluded the letter by saying:
You are a terrorist. You choose to wage war against India. Like all other such perpetrators in the past, this is not going well for you. Know this when you choose to fight the Indian army; they will kill you. Your supporters want blood now. let it go. cheers! “
The letter was met with enthusiastic responses online and in mainstream media across India. He even got a thank-you call from the then-serving Indian Army general. The next day, he was invited by a news channel to join the panel to debate what happened to Burhan Vani. So he started getting invitations from various news channels to participate in debates on their shows.
Facts/trivia
- He was stationed in the Lahaul Spiti area in 1996 when he slid off a cliff and ended up being buried under a snowdrift. He stayed under the snow for hours until his rescue rescued him. That was after this; he developed a lung infection that forced him to retire early.
- As a public speaker, he has spoken at prestigious institutions and corporations around the world such as Oxford University, Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, IIT Roorkee, Dell Computer, Samsung India Ltd. In 2017, he was invited to visit the British Parliament to speak on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
- He hosted two Indian Armed Forces related shows on Republic TV, “Patriot” and “Blitz”. The TV show showcases the life of Indian Army soldiers on duty and the hardships they face.
