Latrell Sprewell’s career
- Latrell Sprewell is off to a great start in his career. In the 1990s, the All-Star led the Golden State Warriors to a historic playoff berth with rookie Chris Webber. Webber was clearly forced to trade after the season.
- This rapid decline to mediocrity (the Warriors didn’t make the playoffs again until 2007) set the tone for Sprewell’s turbulent career. Good times never last long.
- His ability was obvious, but his rush ended his NBA career much earlier than expected. Sprewell’s contract was rescinded after choking PJ Carlesimo in a practice spat. The NBA punished him for a year, and he quickly rose to become one of America’s most reviled athletes.
- He was able to revive his career with the Knicks. However, he was fined $250,000 for failing to disclose his broken hand when reporting to training camp. After five seasons in New York, Sprewell was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2002-03.
- In February 1999, Sprewell played 37 games for the Knicks, averaging 26.0 points per game, and was awarded a five-year, $62 million contract. For the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sprewell, Kevin Garnett and point guard Sam Cassell formed the league’s highest-scoring trio.
- On the other hand, Sprewell turned down a three-year, $21 million contract extension with the Timberwolves on October 31, 2004. His refusal to accept the deal effectively ended his career, with federal marshals canceling his assets, including his two homes and reclaiming his yacht.
- He claimed that $21 million was not enough to support his family. According to ESPN, Sprewell made more than $97 million during his NBA career, but by February 2008, when Citizens Bank filed a foreclosure lawsuit against the $405,000 property he bought in Milwaukee in 1994 , most of the money has apparently been spent.
- Soon after, two of his properties were allegedly foreclosed and he was denied access to the children. Sprewell’s estimated net worth is around $50,000.
