Latta has been starring in her father’s musicals since she was five years old. She also studied classical music in her later years with such masters as Amanat Khan, Pandit Tulsidas Sharma and Aman Ali Khan Saheb. She was inspired by the music of KL Saigal when she was young. Her father died when Lata was 13, and as the eldest son, the financial responsibility of the family fell on Lata’s shoulders.
Lata Mangeshkar started her career in 1942. A family friend, Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, helped her find work as an actress in Marathi and Hindi films. Her career had a rough start as young Latta struggled to gain a foothold in the industry. As a playing singer, her first song was “NaachuYaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari” for a Marathi film Kiti Hasaal in collaboration with composer Sadahivrao Nevreka . In 1943, her first Hindi song was released, along with “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” in the film Gajaabhaau.
