Her father is of Norwegian descent and her mother is of English and Scottish ancestry. The name Wiig comes from the Vik region in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.
Kristen’s grandfather, Gunnar Wiig, immigrated to the United States from Norway as a child and appeared in Rochester, New York, where he was a full-time broadcaster for the Rochester Red Wings baseball team, and later administrator for WHEC stations WHEC-TV and WROC-TV.
Christine moved with her family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania when she was three years old and served at Nitrauer Elementary School and Mannheim Town Middle School through eighth grade. She then moved to Rochester with her family at the age of 13, where she attended the Allendale Columbia School in ninth and tenth grades and graduated from Brighton High School.
She began her higher education by joining Roanoke College, but soon returned to Rochester. She attended community college and participated in a three-month outdoor living program. She has no purpose for acting at this time. Wiig then joined the University of Arizona, majoring in art.
When she took an acting class in college to meet the course requirements, the teacher advised her to continue acting. She was supposed to start a job at a plastic surgery clinic, painting people’s post-op bodies, but the day before her work began, she chose to travel to Los Angeles and try her hand at acting.

Kristen Wiig on SNL – Saturday Night Live
Wiig auditioned and got a spot in Groundlings. Even on an entertaining stage, Wiig quickly proved himself to be a standout. She made audiences laugh with roles she would later bring to SNL, such as the overzealous Target clerk and eccentric film critic Aunt Linda. SNL producer Lorne Michaels discovered her talent and invited her to audition for the show. Halfway through the show’s 31st season, she was allowed to move from Los Angeles to New York City on one week’s notice.
Wiig debuted on SNL on November 12, 2005. Her roles, including the peculiar Penelope, the squirrel Gilly, and the immediate aftermath of financial advisor Suze Orman and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi—became fan favorites. When Amy Poehler left SNL in November 2008, Wiig became the show’s top female performer.
In 2009, she was nominated for an Emmy for her work on SNL, the same year Entertainment Weekly named her one of Hollywood’s 25 Funniest Actresses. “For me, it’s a story that makes people laugh,” Wiig responded. “I just try to be real.”
