The journey of life
Kiefer Sutherland was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, to Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, both Canadian actors who lived and served in the UK for some time. He has a twin sister, Rachel, who is a post-production film supervisor.
His maternal grandfather was Tommy Douglas, a Scottish-born Canadian politician and former prime minister of Saskatchewan, best known for bringing universal health care to Canada.
Sutherland is named after American-born author and director Warren Kiefer, who directed Donald Sutherland in his first novel, The Castle of the Living Dead. In 1968, Sutherland’s family went to Corona, California. His parents separated in 1970.
In 1975, Sutherland and her mother moved to Toronto, Ontario. He joined Crescent Town Primary School, East York St. Clair Junior High (now Gordon A. Brown Secondary School), and Toronto’s John G. Althouse Secondary School.
He attended several high schools, including St Andrew’s College, Martin Grove College, Hubbard College, Silverthorn College, Malvern College and Annex Village Campus. He also taught a semester at Regina Mundi Catholic College in London, Ontario, and attended weekend acting classes at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School.
Sutherland told Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2009) He and Robert Downey, Jr. were roommates for three years when he first moved to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. He and Downey Jr also worked together in the movie 1969.
Sutherland has a daughter (Sarah) from her first marriage to Camilia Keys, widow of Chicago guitarist/singer Terry Case, whom he was married from 1987 to 1990. Through their marriage, he became the stepfather to Camilla’s daughter, Michelle Keith, who had two sons. Sarah Sutherland is an actress who performs on the TV series Vice.
Julia Roberts joined Sutherland in 1990 when they co-starred in Flatliners. In August 1990, Roberts and Sutherland announced their engagement and planned a large studio-planned wedding on June 14, 1991. Roberts called off the engagement three days before the wedding, allegedly because Sutherland was meeting a dancer named Amanda Rice.
Sutherland refused to have an affair with Rice, saying they only met because he wanted to play pool. On what is believed to be their wedding day, Roberts moved to Ireland with Sutherland’s friend Jason Patrick.
In the late 1990s, Sutherland purchased a 900-acre ranch in Montana and toured on the rodeo circuit. On June 29, 1996, Sutherland married Kelly Wing. The couple split in 1999 and he filed for divorce in 2004. The divorce was completed on May 16, 2008. He dated Bo Derek in 2000.
Sutherland began dating Olmito, Texas-based model/actress Cindy Vela sometime in 2014, and kept their relationship private until 2017 when they started making public appearances. Vela and Sutherland got engaged in 2017. As of 2019, they live in Toluca Lake in Los Angeles.
