Smuggling of diamonds and jewellery
Karim Lala started her career as an ordinary worker in Mumbai. Gradually, he opened a small business of the same name in Mumbai. He started making huge profits from the smuggling business and expanded his business into the illegal alcohol trade. His name and business became colorful.
The first mafia hall of the Mumbai underworld
Abdul Karim Sher Khan has ventured into the criminal world by running an illegal casino in Mumbai. Soon he was promoted to the leader of the “Patan Gang,” a gang known for contract killings, forcible evictions, kidnappings and racketeering. The gang operates several “carrom clubs” that act as a front for illegal money-lending, gambling and gambling activities. Building on his organised crime business, he has also developed a number of legitimate businesses, using a combination of the two to create and maintain a corresponding sphere of influence. A few years later, Lara became the mastermind of several criminal enterprises. While many call Haji Mustan Mirza the first mafia lord in Mumbai, experts believe Karim was the first mafia lord in Mumbai. Haji Mustang himself called Lala, the real master of the hall.
Links to two ‘Mumbai Mafia’
Karim was later linked to two other bigwigs in Mumbai’s smuggling trade, Mastan Mirza aka Haji Mastan and Varadarajan Mudaliar. In the seventies, Lara came up with the idea of dividing Mumbai among themselves, Lara, Mustang, and Mudalyar; so that they would be free to carry out their criminal activities without any conflict between them. The three eventually parted ways and agreed to conduct business in their respective specific areas under a mutual agreement between the three.
Weekly “Duba”
Lala used to hold a weekly “durbar” where he acted as an arbitrator to address people’s grievances. This practice has made him so popular that people from different societies and communities turn to him for help. In his Durbar, there was once no distinction between rich and poor. Karim has also provided financial help to the needy and the poor.
Rivalry with Dawood Ibrahim
Dawood’s entry into the smuggling business upsets Karim Lara. Before Dawood’s arrival, there was no bloodshed in Mumbai’s underworld. A bloody battle begins between Dawood and the Patan gang. Dawood wanted to avenge the death of his brother, whose gang members killed Karim Lala’s brother Rahim Khan in 1986, five years after his brother Shabir’s death. Gradually, Dawood Ibrahim’s D Company eliminated Karim Lara’s Pathan gang from Mumbai. It is also said that Lara once captured Dawood and beat him severely. Dawood was seriously injured. This thing still prevails in Mumbai’s underworld.
leadership transfer
Due to declining health, Karim gradually handed over the leadership of the Patan gang to his nephew Samad Khan in the late seventies. He remains friends with his counterparts Haji Mastan and Varadarajan. In 1980, he tried unsuccessfully to forge peace between his nephew Samad Khan and his rivals Sabir Ibrahim Kaskar and Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. In addition to his illicit business, Lara also runs legitimate businesses, which include two hotels (Al Karim Hotel and New India Hotel) and a travel and passport agency called New India Tours and Travels.
