Karan Thapar was born on November 5, 1955 (age 63; as in 2018). His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He attended Doon School in Dehradun and Stowe School in England. He studied for a BA in Economics and Political Philosophy at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, UK in 1977. He also holds a PhD in International Relations from St Anthony’s College, an affiliated college of the University of Oxford, UK.
When Karan Thapar was studying at Doon School, he was the editor-in-chief of The Doon School Weekly, the school magazine. While at Pembroke College, Cambridge, Callan was Vice-President of the Cambridge Union Association. While at Cambridge, he became known for inviting controversial filmmaker Jorgen Thorsen to Cambridge University for an interview. The invitation was later withdrawn by the Cambridge Union; after a public backlash against the invitation. Callan once wrote a column on political philosophy and has many fans at Cambridge University.

He was born in Srinagar, from a Punjabi family. His father, General Pran Nath Thapar, was a former Army Chief of Staff of the Indian Army. His mother is Bimra Thapar. He has 3 sisters – Shobha Thapar, Premila Thapar and Kiran Thapar. Karan’s cousin Romila Thapar is a noted historian and professor emeritus.
He is married to Nissa Thapar. She died of encephalitis on December 3, 1982, at the age of 33. Karan is a widower and has not remarried.
Profession
Karan Thapar started her career with the British Times newspaper in Lagos, Nigeria. He worked there until 1981, and was promoted to lead writer for The Times. His ties to the print media ended in 1982 when Callan quit The Times and moved to the UK to work with London Weekend Television. He worked there for ten years before moving to India in 1991.
In India, Karan joined the Hindustan Times TV Group as executive producer and is an integral part of the channel. Over the next decade, Karan also worked with other channels such as Home TV, Star TV, United TV, etc., before starting his own production company, Infotainment TV in 2001; for other news channels and media companies Make content. His company produces programmes for many channels, including the BBC. He joined CNN IBN as an anchor and interviewed Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan, Jayalalita, Aishwarya Rai and others.

- Karan claims in his book that he never gave Narendra Modi another interview after he dropped out. Whenever he sent interview requests, his office said he was busy. He claimed that Modi had asked all BJP leaders to boycott Karan. After BJP’s 2014 win, he has been unable to interview anyone at BJP.
- In 2017, Karan Thapar wrote an article about Kulbhushan Jadhav; an Indian who was arrested in Iran and taken to Pakistan, where he was sentenced to death. Later, when the case went to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the enforcement was put on hold pending a final judgment on the case. Pakistan used Thapar’s article in the ICJ. This sparked outrage among Indians, with many journalists condemning an article written by Thapar for raising questions about the Indian government and RAW.
