Karan Kumar Johar (born Rahul Kumar Johar, 25 May 1972), commonly known informally as KJo, is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, costume designer, actor and television personality who works in Hindi films. He is the son of Hiroo Johar and producer Yash Johar. Johar made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which won him the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. His next two films were the ensemble play Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. (2001) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), both of which have been very successful in overseas markets. His social drama “My Name is Khan” (2010) won him his second Best Director award at the festival. 2018’s spy thriller Raazi won him the Filmfare Award for Best Picture.
These, along with several successful films he has produced under the Dharma Productions banner, have made him one of the leading directors and producers of Hindi films. Johar has also successfully ventured into other areas of the entertainment industry. He hosts TV talk show “Koffee with Karan” and radio show Calling Karan and is a judge on competition reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, India’s Got Talent, India’s Next Superstar.

Karan Johar was born in Mumbai, India, the son of filmmaker Yash Johar, founder of Dharma Productions and Hiroo Johar. He attended Greenlawn High School and attended the Faculty of Human Resource Business and Economics in Mumbai (now Mumbai). He has a master’s degree in French.
Johar started his entertainment career as an actor playing the role of Shrikant in 1989’s Doordarshan Serial Indradhanush. As a child, he was influenced by Indian commercial cinema: he cited Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra and Sooraj R. Barjatya as his inspirations. For a while, Johar followed numerology and created movie titles in which the first word and some other words in the title started with the letter K. After watching the 2006 film Lage Raho Munna Bhai criticizing numerology, Johar decided to stop the practice.
In February 2017, Johar became the father of twins (a boy and a girl) through surrogacy. The twins were born at Masrani Hospital in Mumbai. Johar named his son Yashi – after his father and his daughter Roohi – rearranged from his mother’s name Hiroo.

Karan as director
Karan Johar entered the film industry as an assistant director in Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which is considered a milestone in Hindi cinema. He then made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). The first half of the film revolves around the college triangle between a callous boy (Shah Rukh Khan), his tomboy best friend (Kajor) and the prettiest girl in college (Rani Mukherjee). love, while the second half revolves around the present – the widowed boy tries to reconnect with his best friend, who is now engaged to marry another man (Salman Khan).
The film became a box office hit and received mostly positive reviews from critics. Critic Anish Khanna, writing for Planet Bollywood, said: “Karan Johar’s directorial debut is impressive, with a good sense of script and knows how to make a movie with STYLE.” It won the National Film Award for Best Mass Entertainment Film . It swept most of the major awards at the 44th Filmfare Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and all four acting awards.
Johar’s third directorial work was the multi-star romantic drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), which tackled the controversial theme of marital infidelity in the setting of non-resident Indians living in New York City. The film’s plot follows a knocked-out athlete (Shahrukh Khan) whose dissatisfaction with his wife (Preity Zinta) leads to an affair with a family friend (Rani Mukerji), who also has a crush on her with a childhood friend. Johar goes from highs to lows, plateaus to peaks , as easy as a professional. The film features Ranbir Kapoor, a man who is dealing with his unrequited love for his best friend, played by Anushka Sharma. It also featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as an older woman who had a brief relationship with the character of Kapoor. The film was a commercial success and received mixed reviews from critics, who called it “Johar’s most mature film to date.”
On August 11, 2018, Johar announced on Twitter his next film, Takht, a period drama set in the Mughal era featuring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal , Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi and more.
