Kalpana (July 8, 1943 – May 12, 1979), born Sharat Lata, was a Kannada film actress. In the film industry, she is affectionately known as Minugu Taare (“The Shining Star”). She is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses in Kannada films, gaining both fans and critics. She made her screen debut as the female lead in the 1963 film Saaku Magalu, directed by veteran BR Pantulu, Death.
During his career from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, Kalpana starred in a number of commercially successful and critically acclaimed films, many of which featured actor Rajkumar. She has also worked in some Tamil, Tulu, Malayalam and Telugu films. Many of her successful films are female-centric, giving her plenty of room for acting.
Kalpana family
Kalpana was born to a Tulu-speaking couple Krishnamurthy and Janakamma, Sharat Lata, in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. Passionate about acting, she participated in all the talent competitions held by the school. She also pays a lot of attention to popular style statements, but has her own unique flair in her outfits.
She moved to Uttara Kannada district with her younger brother and her mother to experience the basics of film and stage acting. When she moved to Davangere, she was introduced to Shiv Kumar who took her to Madras and introduced her to Narsimharaju.
Famous director BR Pantulu brought her into the film industry and she was impressed. Kalpana decided she wanted to become a full-fledged movie actress and quickly achieved her goal and made a name for herself in the industry.
kalpana heritage
The late actor Kalpana – who was nicknamed “Minugu Taare” (Blinking Star) – has not entirely disappeared from Kannada-language movie lovers since her death. Known for her complex and tragic roles, she died under mysterious circumstances. From 1967 to 1972, she dominated the Kannada film industry.
V. Sreedhara, a school teacher in Mysore, who was born 6 years after her death, produced a 1,114-page book documenting her life and work, covering 79 films. It has details on the roles she plays as well as input from various directors, co-artists and writers. He started writing the book at 21 and finished it at 27.
“Even after working for so long, I didn’t fully understand Kalpana’s character because she’s a complicated person,” he said. Mr. Sreedhara’s “Rajatha Rangada Dhruvathare” was released in Bangalore at an event organised by Charanachitra College, Karnataka.
Kalpana as a fashion icon
She was a fashion icon of that era. Her elegance, taste and exquisite dress were unmatched by other female stars at the time. Large-sleeved blouses, ruffled blouses are her contribution to Karnataka style. Some of her fashion statements include elaborate hairstyles, large rings on her fingers, rich zari and chiffon sarees, multiple bracelets and long necklaces.
Kalpana Career/Film
In 1963, director BR Pantulu recruited Sharat Lata to enter the Kannada film industry for his Rajkumar-starrer Saaku Magalu. Later, she changed her screen name to Kalpana. However, it was Belli Moda, directed by Puttanna Kanagal in 1967, that brought her to the forefront. This portrayal of her was immediately accepted, and she quickly rose to the top of the list of actresses of the 1960s. During the late 1960s and 1970s, she dominated the Kannada language film industry and was credited for some of the authors in films such as Sharapanjara, Gejje Pooje, Belli Moda, Eradu Kanasu, Kappu Bilupu, Bayalu Daari, Gandhada Gudi and Bangarada Hoovu acclaimed for supporting roles. She worked with almost every major actor and director of her era. Her most common co-stars are Rajkumar, Gangadhar and Udaya Kumar. P. Susheela and S. Janaki are her regular voices behind songs in the film. She competed fiercely with her contemporaries such as Jayanthi, Bharathi and Chandrakala.
Originally, she was the favorite actress of ace director Putana Kanagal. Their association has produced some of the best films in the history of Kannada cinema. Many of their films have strong and powerful messages that are cherished in film history. Kanagal largely groomed Kalpana, and although they were romantically linked by the media, industry insiders agreed that their relationship was a Guru-Shishya one. However, they fell apart when Kanagal refused to give her a key role in Nagarahaavu. Kanagal went on to cultivate Aarathi and Kalpana later appeared in some regular movies.
Her efforts to revive her career failed. Although her later films with Rajkumar (Daari Tappida Maga and Eradu Kanasu) and Anant Nag (Bayalu Daari) were popular, they failed to revive her career. By 1977, she had no movies on hand. She then started to focus on theatre companies in North Karnataka, mainly working at Gudigeri Basavaraj’s theatre companies. As debts mounted and movie offers dwindled, she fell into a deep depression.
She has also acted in several Tamil and Telugu films such as Madras to Pondicherry and Sadhu Mirandal. The films were later made into Bombay in Hindi for Goa and Sadhu Oshetan. Both films were very successful at the box office. She also starred in the Tulu film Koti Channayya directed by K. Shivaram Karanth. She also starred in the Malayalam film “Scholar”. She lived only 35 years, of which she spent 15 years in the Sandalwood film industry. She won Karnataka Best Actress three times for Belli Moda, Hannele Chiguridaga and Sharapanjara. During her film career, she appeared in more than 80 films, most of them in Kannada.
