Jason Bateman Movies & TV Shows
- Bateman made her television debut in 1981 and has had recurring roles in Little House on the Prairie. He played the adopted son of pioneers Charles and Caroline Ingalls in the hit series based on the original Laura Ingalls Wilder book.
- Bateman first showed his comedic talents in 1982 on the popular sitcom “Silver Spoon” starring Rick Schroeder. In the series, Bateman plays Schroeder’s scheming school friend. His boy-next-door good looks and sense of humor made him very popular with younger audiences, especially teenage girls.
- Bateman turned to the short-lived TV comedy This Is Your Action, playing another scheming teen. He soon landed a supporting role in another family comedy, playing one of Harper’s three sons alongside Valerie Harper on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Thanks to his efforts, at the age of 18, he became the youngest person to be elected to the Directors Guild of America.
- While enjoying the success of the sitcom, Bateman joined his sister Justin in the 1986 TV movie Can You Feel Me Dancing? It was made by their father together.
- Bateman then made his debut in the poorly received Teen Wolf (1987), the sequel to the 1985 blockbuster comedy starring Michael J. Fox. He plays a relative of Fox’s character who discovers that he too suffers from the family’s werewolf curse. The film grossed just $7.6 million and was considered a commercial failure. Bateman’s father also made the film.
- After the Hogan family ended in 1991, Bateman continued to look for work on television. However, none of these roles lasted very long. The family comedy Simon lasted only one season, from the fall of 1995 to the spring of 1996.
- Taking a career risk, Bateman dropped his usual sitcom role in the 2001 film series My Best Friend. Based on the 1997 indie comedy “Kiss Me, Guido,” the show explores the relationship between a gay man (Bettman) and a straight Italian-American who becomes a roommate (Danny Nucci).
- After the series failed, Bateman entered an uncertain period in his career. “After 26 years of doing something, most people either change course or leave. I said my welcome on TV; you get a certain vibe, they’d rather see people they haven’t seen before,” The actor explained to Vogue.
- In 2003, Bateman experienced a professional renaissance with the TV comedy Arrested Development. He plays Michael Bluth, a widower with a teenage son (Michael Cera) who can’t seem to escape his dysfunctional family. Each of his adult siblings exhibits a unique twisted outlook on life.
- While it never had good ratings, Arrested Development was a major success. The show received numerous Emmy nominations for its first three seasons, including 2005’s Bateman for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. That same year, Bateman won his first Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series.
- After three seasons on FOX, Arrested Development was canceled by the network in 2006. To the delight of fans, however, the series was renewed by Netflix in 2013 and the entire cast reunited for season four. Season 5 premiered on Netflix in May 2018 after another hiatus.
- Bateman’s work in the early days of Arrested Development helped reinvigorate his film career. He landed a string of small and supporting roles in comedies such as 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and 2006’s Breaking Up With Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn.
- Bateman reunited with Garner for the 2007 indie comedy “Juno,” about a pregnant teenager (Ellen Page). In the film, he and Garner play a married couple who want to adopt Page’s child.
