club career
Leeds United
- On 10 November 2002, Milner made his first-team debut for Leeds United, coming on as a substitute for Jason Wilcox in the final six minutes of the game against West Ham. At 16 years and 309 days, he became the second-youngest player in Premier League history.
- He scored a goal in a 2–1 win over Sunderland on 26 December 2002, making him the youngest Premier League goalscorer at 16 years and 356 days. Everton’s James Vaughan broke his record in 2005. Milner scored again two days later, using a deft first touch and maneuvering to avoid a tackle from Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly. With this move, he created 18 yards (16 m) of space for his curling shot.
- On February 10, 2003, Leeds United signed Milner to a five-year contract as he played more for the team. In the 2003-04 season, Milner spent a month on loan at Swindon Town to gain experience as a first-team player. As a player, he considers it a valuable experience.
- By contrast, Leeds’ fortunes have been slipping. The team has been the subject of numerous negative media coverage, with several first-team players being sold.
- The club’s eventual relegation to the Championship has sparked speculation over Milner’s future. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton have all expressed interest in signing him. In the end, Villa and Everton failed to make offers, with Milner rejecting Spurs’ bid because their positions were too far from his home.
- Leeds insist he will not be sold, with chairman Gerald Krasner calling him “the future of Leeds”. Still, financial problems forced Leeds to sell Milner to Newcastle United for £5m. Milner did not want to leave the club he supported as a child, however, he wanted to do what was “in the best interests of the club” and signed a five-year contract with Newcastle in July 2004.
Newcastle United
- In Newcastle United’s Asian pre-season, Milner scored his first goal for the club in Hong Kong’s 1-1 draw with Kit Chi. He observed how Newcastle striker Alan Shearer handled fans and media attention on this tour.
- On 18 August 2004, Milner played as a winger in Newcastle’s Premier League game against Middlesbrough, although he played on the left for Leeds.
- He made his UEFA Cup debut after coming on as substitute Shola Ameobi in Newcastle’s UEFA Cup game against Israel’s Bnesakhnin. Also as a substitute, he scored his first competitive goal for the club in the 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.
- Despite starting 13 league games under Souness, it wasn’t until April 2005 that he played his first Premier League game for Newcastle. Milner was frustrated by not being a starter for most of the season.
- The 2005-06 season started with Newcastle’s 3-1 away win over FK ZTS Dubnica in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, with Milner scoring and helping the team through Alan Shearer’s third goal.
On loan to Aston Villa
- Newcastle’s purchase of Norberto Solano from Aston Villa resulted in Milner being loaned to Villa for the remainder of the season. Milner, who was acquired in the deal by David O’Leary, who worked with Milner at Leeds, said he hoped Villa would improve his abilities as a player.
- He made his Villa debut on 12 September 2005 against West Ham in the Premier League. Five days later, he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. The following week, he scored twice in the second half against Wycombe Rovers to help them recover from a 3-1 half-time deficit.
- Milner has been optimistic about his team all season. Villa, who will bounce back from a poor start to the season, has praised the quality of the squad.
- Milner was widely seen by Villa fans as a positive signing after a disappointing season. Milner himself has seen a positive movement on loan, and he has expressed his willingness to join Villa permanently given the possibility of becoming a regular starter, but that possibility is beyond his control.
- Newcastle manager Glenn Rod appears to appreciate Milner’s skills more than Souness and wants him to stay at the club. Aside from O’Leary’s departure and Villa’s lack of transfer funds, a permanent deal for Milner to sign seems unlikely.
- When Villa rejected Milner’s offer as part of a deal for Gareth Barry…
