Halina Hutchins was born in 1979 (42 years old at the time of death) in Gorodets, Zhytomyr, Ukraine. She grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She graduated in International Journalism from Taras Shevchenko State University in Kyiv, Ukraine. She then attended the American Film Institute’s School of Music (AFI) School of Music in 2015 and received a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Photography.

She then moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as a cinematographer. Initially, she worked as a production assistant and flashlight for various short films. American cinematographer Robert Primes recommended her to study filmmaking at the American Film Institute (AFI) School of Music. After graduating from AFI, her dissertation titled “Hidden” was screened at the International Film Festival “Camerimage”. She then worked as a director of photography at the International Association of Cinematographers (IATSE Local 600) in Los Angeles, California. She then joined the Society of Innovative Artists in New York as Director of Photography. Halyna Hutchins has worked as a cinematographer on Hollywood films such as Darling (2019), The Enemy (2020) and Blind Fire (2020).
She also worked as a cinematographer on the BET+ original series “A Luv Tale: The Series” (2019) in English. In 2021, she is filming the English-language film “Rust,” which will also be her last film.

On October 21, 2021, during the filming of the English-language film “Rust” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S., she was shot by a prop fired by American actor Alec Baldwin, and American film director Joel Sousa was severely hit Gun wounded.
