Gyanendra wanted to become a chartered accountant, but after his brother Anand, who was deaf, died in a train accident, he gave up his dream of dedicating his life to the disabled. He started advocacy for the disabled, especially the deaf and speech-impaired. In 1997, he founded the Anand Service Society, an organization for the deaf, with his wife, Monica Purohit.
The organization assists deaf and speech-impaired children in education, training and employment assistance, and has residential centers in tribal and rural areas of Indore and Madhya Pradesh, such as Dhar and Alirajpur (the most illiterate areas in India). Through his organization, he advocates for access to deaf children in normal schools, state government appointments for deaf and speech-impaired people in teacher positions, appointments and admissions for deaf people in government ITI colleges, and BERA testing is mandatory in government jobs, etc.

- When his deaf NGO needed land, the government refused to give him any assistance. Later, Gyanendra’s father, the late Babulal Purohit, gave his pension to help him buy a piece of land for charity.
- Gyanendra and Monica Purohit composed the national anthem in sign language in 2003, which was endorsed by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- In 2005, Gyanendra and his wife signed the Bollywood blockbusters Sholey (1975), Gandhi (1982), Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) and Taare Zameen Par (2007).
- Gyanendra and his wife also launched India’s first deaf and speech impaired friendly police station with MP Police at Tukoganj Police Station in Indore. This is where deaf and speech-impaired people can complain in sign language.
- In 2015, Gyanendra and his wife appeared in the BBC production of “Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi”, a talk show hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and broadcast on Star Plus.
- In 2017, he appeared with his wife on the talk show “DSC Show”, which was broadcast on Zee Entertainment and hosted by Dr. Subhash Chandra. On the show, Gyanendra spoke about the work of the Anand Service Association and his dedication to helping people with disabilities.
- During the national lockdown of the coronavirus pandemic, the Anand Services Association rescued more than 500 deaf people with disabilities through a sign language video phone helpline (rolled nationwide). Most famously, they rescued a deaf girl from suicide through a 14-hour online video call.
- In February 2020, Anand Service Society’s initiative became part of “Indian Social Responsibility Network (ISRN) Stories – Volume 4” presented by Pt. Deendayal Upadhaya, Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
- Gyanendra and his wife also trained the staff of Narmada Jhabua Gramin Bank in sign language. The bank became the first deaf friendly bank in India.
- Gyanendra and his wife also helped Sudeep Shukla, a deaf man, to contest the 2018 state assembly election in Satna, Madhya Pradesh. The couple helped Shukla deliver a speech. He was the first deaf MLA candidate.
