- Dr. Smita Kolhe gave birth to her child while working for tribal revitalization in Melghat village. Dr. Ravindra decided to deliver the baby himself, as he did for other villagers. Unfortunately, with some complications following the birth of her first child, Dr. Smita had the option of moving to a better facility, but she chose to stay in the village. This helped her gain the trust and respect of the villagers.
- The doctors and couples worked together in a sincere effort to help reduce the infant mortality rate in the region from 200 per 1,000 to 40 per 1,000, and the pre-school mortality rate from 400 per 1,000 to 100 per 1,000.
- The couple regularly hosts workshops and camps for young people in the country and countryside. In these camps and workshops, they talk about different farming techniques, the importance of farming, and how the government can provide certain beneficial farming programs. The couple’s eldest son, Rohit Kolhe, is a farmer, and their younger son, Ram Kolhe, a doctor, wants to become a surgeon and help the village’s parents. The couple was invited to several talk shows and events.
- The State Minister of Public Works approached Dr. Smita Kolhe with an offer to build a house for the Kolhe family. Dr. Smita asked him to improve the road connectivity in the village, not the house, and because of her, more than 70% of the villages now have good road connectivity.
