Dr. Ravindra Kolhe was born in 1962 (Age 58; as of 2020) in Shegaon, Maharashtra. Ravindra Kolhe, the first doctor in his family, completed his MBBS degree at Nagpur Medical College in 1985. Dr. Ravindra Kolhe is a learned man who was inspired by the books of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. Lavindra wanted to use his knowledge of medicine for a greater cause, and that’s when he came across David Werner’s book A Place Without Doctors. He decided to work in Biragarh, a small village in Mergat, Maharashtra, because there are no medical facilities in the village and one has to walk 40 kilometers to reach the village.

Dr. Ravindra Kolhe completed his MBBS degree in 1985 at Nagpur Medical College. Dr. Ravindra Kolhe decided to contribute to their progress by providing basic medical assistance to the tribal people in Melgat, Maharashtra. Before leaving the village, however, he spent six months in Mumbai learning something that would come in handy when working in remote areas. He learned how to deliver babies without proper facilities such as ultrasounds and blood transfusions, how to diagnose pneumonia without X-rays, and how to treat diarrhea. Dr Ravindra charges Rs. 1 per patient, because the people in the village are very poor. Ravindra Kolhe left the village in 1987 to complete his MD. He prepared a dissertation on malnutrition in Melgart for his MD, which attracted attention around the world. BBC Radio came forward and covered Melghat’s story, which helped bring the village to everyone’s attention. Dr. Kolhe’s work with tribal peoples has helped him reduce the area’s infant mortality rate from 200 to 40 per 1,000 and pre-school mortality from 400 to 100 per 1,000. People started asking questions about their cattle and fields, so Dr. Ravindra Kolhe spent a year learning the basic anatomy of animals from veterinarians. He also studied agriculture and agriculture with Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth in Akola. With his knowledge, he developed an antifungal seed and started farming with these seeds.

- When Dr. Ravindra Kolhe set out to find his other half, he had four conditions. The conditions are – girls should be willing to walk 40 km as that is the distance to Biragarh. Second, she should be ready to take ‘Rs. 5 weddings” (court marriages cost 5 rupees at the time). Girls should be willing to use rupees for financial management. $400 per month (his fee is 1 rupee per patient and he has 400 patients per month). The last condition is that she should also be ready to beg if it is for the benefit of others. Dr. Smita agreed to all these conditions and married him.
- Dr. Ravindra Kolhe focuses on forest conservation with Dr. Smita Kolhe and his son Rohit Kolhe. They track the environment and the cycle of environmental change that occurs every four years. Kolhe’s can predict droughts and help villagers prepare. The couple have also incorporated a public distribution system into their farming and living techniques to ensure farmers have enough food even on rainy days. This makes Melgart a suicide-free zone for farmers.
