Bipin Rawat is a four-star general in the Indian Army. He served as India’s 27th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and 1st Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He was killed in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021.

Bipin Rawat was born on Sunday 16 March 1958 (Age 63; at the time of death) in Saina Village, Pauri Lansdowne, Garhwal District, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand). His zodiac sign is Pisces. He studied at Cambrian Hall in Dehradun, Uttarakhand and St Edward’s School in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. He then joined the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune. Rawat then graduated from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun (ranked first by merit) and was awarded the “Sword of Honor”. He also holds a postgraduate degree from the Defence Service Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
Rawat took the Advanced Command Course in 1997 at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Rawat then earned a master’s degree. Defence Studies at the University of Madras. He also holds a Diploma in Management and Computer Science from the University of Madras. In 2011, Bipin received an honorary doctorate from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on military media strategy. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Military Media Strategy Studies in 2011 from Chaudhry Charan Singh University, Mirut.

Rawat’s father, Lakshman Singh Rawat, is a retired lieutenant general (retired 1988) of the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff. He is from Sainj village in Pauri Garhwal district and was appointed 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1951. His mother is the daughter of Kishan Singh Parmar, a politician and former MLA of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.

Madhulika is the daughter of Kunwar Mrignendra Singh, who was Riyasatdar of Pargana, Sohagpur Riyasat, Shahdol district. From 2021, she has been named President of the Army Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA). Madhulika was also killed in a helicopter crash near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, along with Bipin Rawat.

Profession
On 16 December 1978, Bipin Rawat was appointed to the 5th Battalion (the same battalion as his father) of 11 Gorkha Rifles. When he was promoted to colonel, he commanded the “5th Battalion, 11th Gorkha Rifle Regiment” in the eastern sector along the Kibithoo line in Arunachal Pradesh. When he was promoted to the rank of “Brigadier General”, he commanded the “Rashtriya Rifles Sector 5” in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir. As a brigadier general, he also commanded a multinational brigade in the “Chapter VII Mission” in the Central African Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he received the “Force Commander’s Commendation” twice.
When Rawat was promoted to major general, he took over as commander of the 19th Infantry Division (GOC) at Johnson & Johnson Uri. As Lieutenant General, he commanded the “Third Army” headquartered in Dimapur, Nagaland, before taking over the Southern Army in Pune. He has also held various staff positions such as teaching tenure at the Indian Military Academy (Dhradun), Logistic Staff Officer, Military Secretary Colonel of the Restructured Army Plains Infantry Division (RAPID) in Central India, and many more.
One of the highlights of his career was a cross-border operation in Myanmar in 2015, in which Indian troops successfully fought NSCN-K insurgents. In 2016, he also participated in the planning of surgical operations. On January 1, 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Army Commander and assumed the post of General Commander-in-Chief of Southern Command (GOC-in-C). On September 1, 2016, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Army (VCOS). On December 17, 2016, Rawat was appointed as Chief of Army Staff by the Indian government. He became the 27th Army Chief of Staff and took office on 31 December 2016 following the retirement of General Darbir Singh Suhag.
On December 30, 2019, a day before his retirement, the Indian government announced that Bipin Rawat would be appointed as the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). His service was extended without retiring and he took office on January 1, 2020. His rank will continue until his death on December 8, 2021.

- Bipin, who sparked controversy over a meeting in Nagpur with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, was in public view in uniform. He later defended himself by saying there was nothing wrong with respecting elders.
- During his tenure as Army Chief of Staff, Rawat was very hostile to Kashmiri civilians, and during a clash between civilians and security forces in 2017, Rawat said: “I hope these people are not throwing stones at us, they are throwing stones at us. Shoot us. Then I’ll be happy. Then I can do what I (want to do).” His remarks were severely criticized by the media.
- In 2017, he was criticized for presenting the “Army Chief of Staff Commendation Card” to Major Leetul Gogoi for his continued efforts in counterinsurgency operations. His decision was criticized because in 2017 Gogoi tied a Kashmiri citizen to the front of his jeep to prevent trebuchets from attacking his convoy. - In December 2018, Rawat drew criticism for his statement warning soldiers who falsely claimed to be disabled to earn extra income through “disability pensions.” He said the truly disabled would receive medical and financial care, but those who understated their pensions should rehabilitate or the consequences would be severe.
- At one point, in an interview with a news channel, he objected to the idea of women in combat roles. He said women might complain about men peeking at their tents while they were changing, so we had to provide a sheet around her. His remarks were strongly opposed by many factions of society.
- On December 26, 2019, he publicly condemned the protests against the CAA and NRC. His remarks drew criticism from the opposition party and many senior Indian Army personnel. Because the Army never commented or interfered in political affairs.

On December 8, 2021, Bipin Rawat was on his way to the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington (Nilgiri Hill) when he had to address staff and student officers of the staff course in Kunu, Tamil Nadu. He was travelling with his wife Madhulika and 11 others in an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter.

On December 10, 2021, he was cremated at the Brar Square Crematorium at Camp Derry and received full-service honours. The body of his wife Madhurika was also placed on the same pyre.
