The journey of life
Benedict Cumberbatch was born on 19 July 1976 at Queen Charlotte and Chelsea Hospital in the Hammersmith area of ββLondon to actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. He appeared in the Kensington and Chelsea area.
He has a half-sister, Tracy Peacock, from his mother’s first marriage. His grandfather, Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, was a two-war captain and a leading figure in London’s high society. His great-grandfather, Henry Arnold Cumberbatch, was a statesman who served as consul in Turkey and Lebanon, and his great-great-grandfather, Robert William Cumberbatch, was also a British consul in Turkey and the Russian Empire.
Cumberbatch was the third cousin of King Richard III’s 16th time in The Hollow Crown. He attended Richard III’s funeral in 2015 and read a poem. Cumberbatch attended boarding school from the age of eight; he was educated at Brambletye School in West Sussex and was an arts scholar at Harrow School.
He is a member of The Rattigan Society, Harrow’s foremost climactic arts club, named after old Harrovian and playwright Terence Rattigan. He was involved in a number of Shakespeare assignments at school and made his debut as the fairy queen Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream when he was 12 years old. Cumberbatch’s drama teacher Martin Tyrrell called him “the best male student actor” he had ever worked with.
After leaving Harrow, Cumberbatch took a year off to work as an English teacher at a Tibetan monastery in Darjeeling, India. He then took a position at Manchester Victoria University (now Manchester University), where he analysed drama. He continued his actor education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and obtained an MA in Classical Performance.
On January 16, 2018, it was announced that Cumberbatch would become Timothy West’s LAMDA chairman. “It’s an honor to see the next generation of actors, directors and technologists flourish,” Cumberbatch said at the time of his appointment.
