Arundhati Bhattacharya is a retired Indian banker and the first woman to hold the top job at India’s public sector giant, State Bank of India. Arundhati Bhattacharya was born on Sunday 18 March 1956 (Age 65; as of 2021) in Calcutta, Pisces. She grew up in Bilae (Chhattisgarh) and Bokaro (Jharkhand), completed her studies at St Xavier’s School in Bokaro and went to Lady Brabourne College, Calcutta to complete her English Literature degree. Arundhati attended Jadavpur University, Calcutta, from 1972 to 1974 to study for a Master of Arts in English.

Early SBI
Arundhati, a 21-year-old freshman who attended SBI’s training school in Hyderabad, started her 4-year career in India’s largest public sector bank in September 1977 on Panchami, the auspicious day of Durga Puja. year’s journey. The banker was quickly transferred to Junior Management Level 1 at SBI’s main branch in Kolkata, and from there to the local headquarters. After joining the bank for almost six years, Bhattacharya has been with its Kharagpur branch for nine years. During Kharagpur’s tenure, the banker was promoted 3 times and was promoted to assistant general manager when she finally left the branch. While at the bank, Arundhati also served as Chief Executive Officer of State Bank of India Capital Markets and Chief General Manager responsible for various new projects. In 1996, she moved to the United States to manage external audit and agency relationships at SBI’s New York branch, where she remained until 2000. Over the next ten years, the banker held various positions at the SBI Mumbai branch and was promoted to Deputy General Manager SBI in 2011.
As SBI Chairman
On 1 October 2013, Ms Bhattacharya succeeded Pratip Chaudhuri and made history by becoming SBI’s first female Chairman and Managing Director after two years as SBI’s Deputy Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer.The appointment of the first lady president has reportedly been in the news as she was personally recommended by the then prime minister Manmohan Singh Among all SBI managing directors competing for the top job. Apparently, this arose due to a last-minute rulebook change by the Ministry of Finance. Arundhati led the sprawling institution at a time when SBI and other public sector banks faced the challenge of piling up non-performing loans and SBI’s asset quality deteriorated. During her key four years as head of the bank, Ms Bhattacharya was instrumental in making the bank a women-friendly workplace. She has introduced policies such as two years of maternity or aged care leave for female employees, free cervical cancer vaccinations and the option for women to work from home.
The veteran banker ended her 40-year tenure at India’s largest public sector bank and retired in October 2017, a year after her official three-year tenure. Arundhati’s term was extended to ensure a smooth merger of SBI’s five associated banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank in 2016. The decision was made jointly by the Government of India and the Bureau of Bank Boards (BBB). In her final days at the bank, Arundhati hinted at her retirement plans. She said in an interview,
I don’t think I’ll stay in banking, but obviously, I won’t just hang up my boots. In this day and age, 60 is too early. Of course, I’m over 60, but that doesn’t matter. There’s a lot to do, and if you have the energy and the will to do it, then I think you can. So, of course, I’ll be active around, but probably not directly into banking. “

One year after retiring on October 17, 2018, Ms. Bhattacharya served as an independent director on the Reliance Industries board for a five-year term. In the same month, she also accepted to serve on the board of CRISIL Ltd. as an additional director (independent) of the company. During his tenure at CRISIL, Arundhati accepted the role of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SWIFT India in December 2018. On April 16, 2020, the banker stepped down from the board of CRISIL Ltd. to become Chairman and CEO of Salesforce India – a global giant in CRM.
