- Nithari Murder: Arun Kumar, the head of the CBI investigation team at the time, claimed that only the guard Koli was involved in the heinous rape and murder at Pandher’s residence in Noida. In a press conference, hee reported: “Pandher never thought that Surinder Koli (his servant) would murder anyone because he considered himself a meek man. Pandher never went to his servant’s bathroom, The body was cut open there.” However, another CBI investigation later found that the owner of the house, Pandher, was also involved in a number of serial rapes and murders.
- Aarushi Talwar Murder: Arun Kumar led the CBI’s first team investigating the controversial Noida double murders of 13-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old domestic servant Hemraj in 2008. In July 2008, Kumar reported in his findings that three domestic servants – Vijay Mandal, Krishna and Rajkumar – were involved in the murders of Arushi Talwar and Hemraj. Arun Kumar’s theory was overturned by the CBI court and a second CBI team was formed to investigate the murder mystery. However, some 100 days later, on September 9, 2008, a second CBI panel confirmed that it had no evidence against any of the servants and therefore could not bring charges against them. Despite mixed results from different investigative teams, the case remains unsolved.
- Muzaffar Nagar Riot: Arun Kumar was assigned to oversee the security and restraint of the 2013 riots in the Hindu-Muslim Muzaffar Nagar. During the conflict, he camped in Muzaffar Nagar and kept a close eye on the situation. The atrocity killed at least 62 people, including 42 Muslims and 20 Hindus, injured 93 and displaced thousands. After the riots ended, Kumar came across as undue political interference and not free to participate in the investigation. He then wrote a letter to the Uttar Pradesh government requesting that he be removed from UP and seeking a central representative. However, then-Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav whipped senior police officer Arun Kumar, holding him accountable for his failure to control violence in the Muzaffar Nagar community. Kumar was stripped of the position of additional director general (law and order) of Uttar Pradesh and sent to the central representative office.
