Ariel Castro kidnapping
Ariel Castro kidnapped his victims, gave them a ride; he drove everyone to his house, lured them in, took them to the basement, and confined them to his Cleveland location House at 2207 Seymour Avenue, Tremont Uptown. The house was later demolished. In 2002, Castro hitchhiked 20-year-old Michelle Knight. Knight, who knew one of Castro’s daughters, accepted. After Castro persuaded Knight to enter his house, he began raping her. For the next 11 years, Knight would be Castro’s captive. In 2003, Castro offered to drive Amanda Berry, then 16, away from her job at Burger King. Like Knight, Berry knew Castro’s children and got into his car. She was also kidnapped, beaten and held captive. Castro repeated the same scene in 2004 with 14-year-old Gina DeJesus, a close friend of Ariel Castro’s daughter Arlene.
Castro locked the women in his basement for years, then moved them to closed rooms upstairs. During their captivity, Castro bound the women and sexually assaulted them multiple times. Knight became pregnant several times, and Castro starved and beat her until she miscarried. He allowed Berry to get pregnant but forced her to give birth in a plastic swimming pool.
Ariel Castro’s House: House of Horrors
Located at: 2207 Seymour Avenue, in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland.
Castro had a history of abuse long before promising a puppy to lure Knight into the car. He beat his live-in wife, Grimilda Figueroa, so brutally that she developed a brain tumor from a head injury. One night in 1989, after Figueroa called the police to Castro, he threatened to kill her and take their children if she brought charges.
Later, he stomped her head with a boot in front of the child, and Figueroa decided to file a formal complaint. Castro’s case was brought to a grand jury in 1994, but he placed the stakes at the court entrance and told Figueroa that he would kill her and their children if she testified. She never went to court, and the grand jury declined to indict him, citing insufficient evidence. Like many domestic abusers, Castro never served time to defeat Figueroa.
Castro has encountered many dangerous things in the more than a decade he has kept prisoners at home. There were guests in and out of his home, including his family, who apparently never suspected anything. In 2004, Ariel’s daughter Angie Castro (also Arlene Castro’s sister, friend of DeJesus and the last person to see her before she disappeared) received a strange message on her answering machine. The message, an apparent pocket dial, included the voice of a terrified young woman screaming, “Get away from me!” Angie filed a police report, but the FBI tracked down another phone; DeJesus’ mother believes the phone tracked There could be a mistake, the call actually came from Castro’s house.
The friendship between DeJesus and Arlene Castro, Ariel Castro’s daughter, also led to another close encounter with Castro. Police begin investigating Arlene’s stepfather, Fernando Colon, as a suspect in Gina’s disappearance. Colon said he told police they should investigate Castro — he said he told them Castro was violent and knew Gina, but police never followed up.
Ariel Castro’s death
Curiously, Castro was found hanged in his cell at the Ohio Orthodox Reception Center at 9:20 pm on September 3, 2013. After prison medics tried unsuccessfully to rescue Castro, he was taken to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, about 20 miles east. He was pronounced dead at 10:52 that night.
The following month, speculation surfaced that Castro’s death might not have been a suicide, but rather caused by autologous asphyxiation, a sexual act in which individuals obtain pleasure through asphyxiation that ultimately causes them to lose consciousness. Rebutting those claims, the forensic medical examiner who conducted Castro’s autopsy, Ohio’s Jan Gorniak, said she had complete confidence that Castro planned his death. “I did the autopsy myself. I saw the ligation. I saw pictures of the cell,” Gorniak said, according to CNN. “That was suicide.”
