Profession

While working at Seagull Books, she met many creative people and started giving talks on gender issues, which shaped her emotions. Outside of work, she also participates in a lot of volunteer work. she says,
I started working with CINI (Children in Need Institute). I want to work on women’s issues. I have worked for Jeebika, Nari Nirjatan Pratirodh Mancha and other NGOs in the city. “
It was during her volunteering days that she became aware of the issue of violence against women in India that the media and society barely talked about. There are organizations that help women with counseling, legal or other services, but these are largely piecemeal efforts. According to her,
I feel like there should be an organization that can provide all these services under one roof. “
To bring about change, she founded Swayam in 1995, a nonprofit dedicated to women’s rights and ending violence against women in India. She is a director and committee member of Swayam. Originally a women’s shelter, the organization became a provider of direct support services to survivors of violence, partnered with community groups to create violence-free communities, and ran public education programs.
The organization is involved in advocacy, research, publication and documentation on violence against women and other related issues. Along with Swayam, she played a key role in the passage of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act of 2005 and has since worked to ensure that the Act is effectively implemented at the state and national level. In addition to this, she has conducted judicial training as part of the Asia Pacific Judicial Education Equity Advisory Forum and has worked with India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. In addition to handling domestic violence cases, Swayam has also handled several high-profile rape cases, including the Phoolbagan rape in 2000 (where a disabled teenage girl was raped by several police officers) and the rape of a Bangladeshi man at Howrah station in the late 1990s.
