His mother, Manju Malik, was a school teacher. She is also a former freestyle wrestling champion.

Profession
She started her wrestling career in 2012 at Nidani Sports School in Jind (Haryana). Her father always made sure she could easily travel from home to the training centres in Sonnypat and Lucknow. Soon she entered the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). In 2016, she won her first gold medal at the National School Games. In the same year, she also won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Tbilisi (Georgia). She then defended her title for the next two years, winning gold in Athens, Greece in 2017, and then bronze in the same event in Zagreb (Croatia) in 2018. In the same year, she also won the bronze medal as the champion of the National Junior Wrestling Championships.
She then competed at a high level with world champion Linda Morais from Canada. She won the game convincingly. She followed that up with a victory over two-time European champion Grace Bren of Norway in the Matteo Pelicone Ranking Series. With this, she qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by defeating a fierce rival named Shokida Akhmedova from Uzbekistan in the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualifiers in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Later she got injured and couldn’t compete at the best of her ability. As a result, she lost at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (to be held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 lockdown) to double-time world champion Iryna Kurachkina from Belarus. In September 2021, she was selected for the 2021 World Wrestling Championships. In October 2021, she made her debut at the major event, beating Nilufar Raimova from Kazakhstan in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. She won that game with a technical advantage. Technical advantage is the condition for a wrestler to win when he surpasses his opponent by a certain number of points.
Her next match is against Davaachimeg Erkhembayar from Mongolia. In that match, she injured her ankle, but she beat her 5-1 across the board to advance to the penultimate stage of the competition, the semifinals. Her father told her she was in the semifinals after taking painkillers. He further revealed that,
“After losing the Olympics, I advised her to believe in her own karma. Her elbow injury was aggravated in the trials. It was a very difficult month. Anshu (in Nidani village, Kinder district, Haryana state) Coach Jagdeesh Sheoran) continued to train despite the pain. Her determination helped her.”
This was later detailed by her childhood coach, Jagdish Sheoran, who was injured in the August 30, 2021 tryouts for the World Championships. He further said,
“We took her to the doctor and the doctor advised her to rest completely for a week. After that, she only strengthened her legs and gave her elbows the rest she wanted. It’s important to keep her free of injuries, remember next time Senior Nationals in June, then the Commonwealth and the Asian Games next year.”
Her opponent is Solomiia Vynnyk, a junior European champion from Ukraine. She won the match by a huge margin of 11-1. After that game, she said,
“I’m very happy. What I couldn’t do at the Tokyo Olympics I did here. I played every game as my last. I got an injury (elbow) and couldn’t explain the previous one at the World Championships. How much pain I’ve endured this month. I’ll play the final like the last one.”
She also said in a video message on Twitter,
“I’m very happy. At the Olympics, I couldn’t perform the way I wanted. I can’t explain how I trained for a month with that (left elbow) injury. I don’t want to repeat what I ordered at the Olympics. Disappointing performance.”
Then comes the final on October 7, 2021, against Helen Marulis of the United States, who is also a two-time Olympic medalist. In that match, An Shu and her opponent were not aggressive at the beginning.
Soon, her opponent stunned the field with a quick maneuver, before pinning her to the ground for the crucial four points. When An Shu was playing with his injured right elbow, he cried in pain for two minutes and couldn’t stand up. She tried to hold her right hand, but in vain. Because of that injury, she couldn’t resist when Marulis grabbed her right shoulder. After the game, she received medical assistance. However, she lost the game but managed to get her name written into the history books with the silver medal.
Prior to this bout, she had beaten wrestling big names such as Linda Morais, who is also World Champion, Grace Bren: European and U23 World Champion Veronica Tsumikova and Evelina Nikolova.
But this time, the opponent was much more experienced, causing her to lose. Her father is proud of her achievement. He said in an interview,
“Despite the pain, my daughter did a great job and won a silver medal. We all expect her to win a gold medal because it’s been a dream of mine for so long, but don’t worry. It’s just the beginning for her and I’m for her Proud. I couldn’t sleep last night and woke up early today because the excitement kept me from sleeping properly. I’m not the only one in the family with this problem, but before the game everyone in the family was anxious.”

- On this achievement, Haryana Sports and Youth Minister Sandeep Sharma congratulated her and said she made history by reaching the finals of the World Wrestling Championships and brought the crown to the state. He also said that the 19-year-old dominated the semifinals from the start, winning the final in the 57kg category with his technical advantages. He also congratulated his coach and family. He said,
“It was with the inspiration of her family that Haryana’s daughter achieved this feat through her own efforts.”
- One of the main reasons for her participation in the sport is financial stability as she wants to get government jobs through sports quotas. In fact, the Haryana government offered her a railway job after her return from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But she denies this, saying she will only take up the job after graduation (Bachelor of Arts) is complete.
- During her return from the Tokyo Olympics, her father made sure that although she lost, she should be welcomed like a champion. He further added,
“I always get frustrated whenever I come back from an international competition without a medal. But that…
