Annu Kapoor is a famous Indian film actor and TV presenter. He is best known for hosting the vocal reality show Antakshari from 1993 to 2006 and for his roles in Mr. India, Vicky Donor and Jolly LLB 2. He won the Filmfare Award and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Annu Kapoor was born on 20 February 1956 to a Punjabi family in Itwara, Bhopal. His father, Madanlal Kapoor, is the owner of a traveling Parsi theatre company, and his mother, Kamal Shabnam Kapoor, is an Urdu language teacher and trained classical singer. His older brother Ranjit Kapoor is a screenwriter and film director, and his younger brother Nikhil Kapoor is a lyricist and author. Anu also has a younger sister, actress Seema Kapoor.
In 1992, Kapoor married Anupama, who lived in the United States. The couple have 3 sons, Kavam, Maahir and Evaan. The two divorced after a few years of marriage. Later, he married Arunita Mukherjee. As a child, Annu wanted to be a surgeon or an IAS officer. However, due to the poor financial situation of the family, he had to drop out after the 10th class. Soon, he started doing odd jobs like selling tea at a tea stall, running a small firecracker shop, selling virtual currency and lottery tickets. Later, his father insisted that he join his troupe.
After a stint in his father’s theatre company, Kapoor attended the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, where his older brother Ranjit Kapoor was already a student. In 1981, Anu played a 70-year-old man in the stage play Ek Ruka Hua Faisla. In 1983, film director Shyam Benegal saw him in the play and asked him to play a role in his own film, Mandy.
